In our group, fostering is either open-ended, rehab or short term. Posh came to me as an open-ended foster, was with us for 4 months and stayed forever because I could not give her up after that long. She didn't want to be anywhere else. She made that decision for us and I have never regretted it.
Except for Bitsy, all of the others have been short term fosters. These are dogs that have chosen their family and are in need of that 1-2 week transitional home. We find that the adoptions are more successful if we can match the foster home situation up with the adoptive home situation as closely as possible---children ? stairs ? cats ? other dogs ? fenced yard ? leash walk only ? We are hopefully training them to be successful in their new homes---fewer bounces that way.
I was just lucky that Bitsy was chosen after only having her a few weeks. My husband was quickly falling in love with her playful personality and her cute little underbite.
I am in contact with 4 of my foster dogs' families on a regular basis on Facebook. What a great tool that has become for me !! I'm very happy to be able to keep up with a few of you there too !!!
I can foster because I see it as getting new families "hooked " on the breed and I can feed my greyhound "addiction" by having new and different dogs here all the time. My hounds love it too !! It's been great for Posh especially. She was shy when I first adopted her. She is a much more confident, outgoing hound now.
