Today is the day

hlpnhounds Jul 31, 2009 07:40 AM

Today is the day that Bitsy goes to her forever home ! While I am very happy for her and know that she is going to a wonderful family, she will certainly be missed here. I heard my husband telling saying his farewell's before leaving for work today. He just fell in love with her underbite and her skinny little nose.
I am looking forward to hearing updates on her adjustment into her new home. The 2 little girls in the home are just going to love her and she's going to love them----it just might make up for being an "only dog". I say they'll probably be looking to add to their family by Christmas......

Everything went very well.
Janie, I coud not fail.....once she was chosen, that was it....a done deal.
I really think that DH was secretly hoping that she would not get chosen and would have to stay with us. She is going to be very happy in her new home. The family is lovely, their home is lovely....they had all the right squeaky toys there for her. It was a wonderful adoption day !!! I didn't even cry after leaving her there.

We've felt that wonderful feeling...once.
Last year Amber went to a Greyt home, complete with an Italian Grey as a playmate. Her new folks sent a picture of the two of them playing; I'll ask Harry to post it since I'm "photo challanged"

I spoke with Bitsy's new "Mom" yesterday. So far so good !! She is settling in to the routine very nicely--as I knew she would. Mom is very attached already as Bitsy is just a little bit of a velcro dog without being clingy....she just wants to be where her people are.
YEAH for Bitsy !!!

I don't know how foster parents can do this. Once an animal is in my home, it would have to be mine!

In our group, fostering is either open-ended, rehab or short term. Posh came to me as an open-ended foster, was with us for 4 months and stayed forever because I could not give her up after that long. She didn't want to be anywhere else. She made that decision for us and I have never regretted it.
Except for Bitsy, all of the others have been short term fosters. These are dogs that have chosen their family and are in need of that 1-2 week transitional home. We find that the adoptions are more successful if we can match the foster home situation up with the adoptive home situation as closely as possible---children ? stairs ? cats ? other dogs ? fenced yard ? leash walk only ? We are hopefully training them to be successful in their new homes---fewer bounces that way.

I was just lucky that Bitsy was chosen after only having her a few weeks. My husband was quickly falling in love with her playful personality and her cute little underbite.
I am in contact with 4 of my foster dogs' families on a regular basis on Facebook. What a great tool that has become for me !! I'm very happy to be able to keep up with a few of you there too !!!

I can foster because I see it as getting new families "hooked " on the breed and I can feed my greyhound "addiction" by having new and different dogs here all the time. My hounds love it too !! It's been great for Posh especially. She was shy when I first adopted her. She is a much more confident, outgoing hound now.

Lori, I have to hand it to you. I have fostered a couple of times and even though the first one was allright, I fell in love with foster mumber 2, rehabilitated him after him being crated for about 18 months / lots of bad atrophy. We knew that we were getting Dakota and that Charger was a foster, but that big lug got so attached to me... became a bit protective, and I just knew that he and Luke were going to have a battle and that Dakota would be in danger. So, when his muscles were better he went to a group, but when he realized that I wasn't going with him in the car he was leaving in, he howled and cried and tried to get out of the other car. It broke my heart and I sobbed for hours and Butch and I swore never again. But, I did.. I fostered Gigi with intent ... not knowing that her intent was to *kill* Taz. I had been assured that she was cat safe. NOT.. and then she ripped open the side of Dakota and he had 9 staples (he swears that it was elebenty seben stapols). She left that night and was our final foster. What really irks me is that the adoption group, because it was with intent, didn't pay for any of the vet bill. I have such respect for those of you who can and do foster and who do it so well.
