Skin Allergies on Dog, driving me crazy!

ZeusyGoosey Aug 18, 2009 04:29 AM

My dog was biting himself and the area was a bright pink. I put some neosporin on it and after a day or so..I noticed a brownish dirt. It smelled weird. It sorta smelled like the stuff that develops in his ears. That brown wax/dirt. He seemed to get better and I'm not sure what made him decline back to this. What could be wrong?? And what could I do? I'm going crazy and he must be too.

From your description of the smell, it is likely he has a yeast infection. Is he on the diet I previously recommended for him? If not, do so. If he is, increase the omega 3 fatty acids to 1 tsp twice a day. This may be due to some kind of allergy, in which case reduce his food intake to ONLY one kind of fresh meat, the omega 3 oil, and a probiotic. If you are already doing all this, have his thyroid checked.

I stopped the diet you told me to put him on but I'm going to start him back on it. Can you please tell me how I can incorporate bone in it? Do I have to grind it? Which ones do I buy? Oh and how much meat do I use and what type of meat?

You can use any type of raw meat except raw pork. Most dogs will ear only as much as they need, so remove any that is left over after he eats. Only Labradors and Beagles have no self control. If you give them raw bones, give beef neck bones, or the ends, the knuckles of beef marrow bones. What I feed my dog is chicken leg quarters, baked at 350 F for 75 minutes, allowing it to cool overnight, then removing only ther long bones (the leg bone, thigh bone, and Fibula or needle-like bone) and leaving in the backbone, pelvis and tailbone, as well as the skin, meat and cartilage. You can add the liquid back in, but I usually remove the congealed fat. To this I add cod liver oil and plain yogurt.

Thank you so much, Dr. You've been a lot of help. I hope it works!
