Trainer seeking assistance

cjrun2 Sep 03, 2009 08:04 AM

Hi, I'm a trainer trying to work with a family and their new Boston Terrier.

They had some concerns over some behaviors they witnessed after a few weeks of having the dog. First let me clarify, I hear many pet owner uses the word "aggressive" loosely, particular with puppies becase they latch on with tiny teeth, and nip and what not. All very normal. However in this case, in all my years I have never seen such a display.

The puppy upon arrival on the evaluation, we took him out potty, and he was put in to a foyer gated, we sat in the kitchen clear view and near the pup.

after talking with the family on some detail, the pup whined sitting by the gate, I got up walked in and knelt next to him, my intention was so sooth him a bit and set him on my lap, however he turned in to kujo, when I attempted to pet him.

I slipped a lead on him, and sat on the floor. Waited until he calmed and tried again. I though to test to see if he would make appropriate contact to me. I grab a near by bone, offered it and moved in so that he would have to sit on my lap to retrieve it. He did. I went to pet him ….kujo I do not say this lightly.

We tried to trace back any situation that may have set his interpretation of being petted to have in react so violently. Nothing really..... They noticed the difference a week from receiving puppy shots may or may not have had a reaction.

I have worked with BT before in training usually they are very sweet and compliant.

I'm hoping some of you breeders can give e a bit of inside. I want to rule out medical he was checked out by a vet. fine.......

he is due for his next set of shots, the day he will be entering into a training program, with the focus of proper handling and obedience. But this little guy.............

whew..........

I wouldn't rule out some sort of reaction to vaccination. But it can be so very difficult to figure out what is going on with a dog. Perhaps this dog needs to be removed to an expert situation and carefully observed, socialized, and evaluated for, I don't know, at least two weeks. It does not sound safe for it to remain in the home right now. Something is very wrong.

This reaction does seem extreme especially for a puppy. I'd say maybe a recheck at the vet's office is not a terrible idea. Also, how young was this pup taken away from his litter mates? How many were in the litter?
