new breeding flaw in Ayla

deetu Sep 04, 2009 12:06 AM

We took her to the vet for a base visit because we were aware that her patella shifts. I noticed her leg wiggling a couple of times and when my girlfriend was grooming her, she said it was really obvious. Well, Ayla did the Indi 500 thing in the living room and let out a yelp, holding her leg in the air. I rubbed it and it was okay but she did it again twice more.

I love my vet, she is so good. Made sure I got her and not the associate this time. Had to wait too but worth it.

Anyway, she was able to pop the left one out but it went right back. That was probably why she yelped as when she did tight circles, it popped out and hurt. She said it was stage one and it could get bad or it may never get worse so we will keep an eye on it.

She also said I didn't cause it by doing Agility when she was a puppy. She said not to curb her activity, let her do what she feels comfortable, jumping on the couch, climbing stairs. But my husband is so bad, babying her. He is so funny...doesn't remember when he didn't want a dog, right?

She lost weight but could still stand to lose another pound. I don't see it but I believe her and Ayla doesn't need the extra weight to carry around. Been cutting the amount of food down but I really should take her for walks. I actually should walk myself too. It's so hilly here though.

I am getting deer velvet from the pet store for glucosimine and condrotin. She won't be allergic to that. Any other I looked into had chicken or beef in it.

So genetics are: allergies, cataracts, patella
No, this woman no longer breeds Shih Tzus. Now she breeds Rhodsian Ridgebacks.

Oh, I realized she was sleeping with her eyes open the other day. I touched her and she jumped. Ewww...

Bless her sweet little heart! My friend's little mixed breed had to have both her back legs operated on years ago for that. I hope Ayla doesn't

So sorry!!!

My poodle had a knee problem and surgery. The stairs we had at the time didn't help a bit. We have never had a home with stairs again.

Just like if we have a knee problem, we do not just stop moving, but we do things that do not make it worse.

Yea Sally, the vet asked if it was effecting her, if she stopped doing things. She used to just jump on the couch, now she will put up her front legs and wait for me to boost her. She will jump from her bed to get that extra umph so I put a pillow on the floor but she forgets to use it sometimes. Also, sometimes she will cry at the bottom of the stairs and not come up.

Then, of course, there are times when she takes a flying leap onto my chest as I'm sleeping on the couch in the morning. (I'm still on the couch because of my wrist)

Amelia had a luxating patella and it would go out on her. The vet thought that she had a stroke and that is what killed her. I often think it may have been that her knee went out on her when she was jumping up the front steps and she fell and hit her head. I saw her fall a couple of times and roll down the steps but she never hit her head. I guess that will haunt me the rest of my life.

Becker has the beginning of hip dysplasia (sp) in one of his rear legs and he sometimes favors it. Hopefully, with his weight loss it will help the situation some.

They both got their rabies shot thursday and the vet checked them out and was pleased with how they were doing. Especially. with Becker's weight loss. I just wish I felt as good as they do.

Gary, I know how you feel about Amelia. I will always wish I could have done more to save my Peaches. They said I did all I could, but I still can't help but wonder...

How did you get Mr. Becker to lose weight? That is great about their check-ups

Phyl,
That is a good photo of Peaches.

Twice a day, due to his bouts of pancreatitis, we feed him Hill's WD mixed with no salt green beans, peas and carrots. For his supper he gets some boiled chicken breast mixed in. Breakfast consists of a couple of spoons of low fat cottage cheese. For treats he gets apple and baked sweet potato chips and after his meal a half piece of a liver treat. He loves it. We have never had a problem with him eating. He went from 29 lbs. down to just a little over 25 lbs. and he looks so good. Tootles has always been a picky eater and some days she just eats a little bit. Other days she gobbles her food down so we don't worry about her.

That sounds like a great diet for Becker, Gary. I think he's eating a more balanced meal that I am.

I've been very lucky with Katie. She's alwayts been a very eager eater. I think she would eat Brand X dog food if I gave it to her. LOL

Yes Dee Patellar luxation is hereditary and one of the things a responsible breeder checks for. Keep watching her eyes, dogs that sleep with their eyes open are susceptible to dry eye which requires eye drops.
