I was thinking......

Skaket Sep 26, 2009 11:19 AM

I know.....it's difficult to think sometimes. LOL I was just wondering if your Shih Tzu is a barker. Katie rarely barks. The only time I can count on her barking is if one of her toys is under a chair or the couch where she can't reach it. She doesn't even bark if someone is at the door. I guess I can't say that she's a very good watch dog. LOL

Trudy only barks at the front door, the bell or a knock. Otherwise, she is very quiet.

That's interesting, Sally since I know that many use to say that the smaller dogs tend to bark a lot. I just haven't found that to be true with Katie. Perhaps it depends on the breed.

Nicky barks when he sees someone walking their dog or he sees a squirrel, or a bird or when he wants me to do something, like get a treat. LOL Nicky is very vocal, just not yappy like some small breeds.

At least Nicky barks for a reason, Phyl. I can understand that. Katie doesn't bark at other dogs...thank goodness. We must have ten or more dogs walked by here each day. I don't think we'll see many today though. It's raining here AGAIN! We need more rain like we need a hole in the head. LOL

My two, terrier and mixed terrier, only seem to bark when necessary, not just because a leaf hits the ground, like some smaller breeds do. They do bark if someone knocks on the door or the deer get to close to THEIR yard.

We don't see any deer here in CT but we use to see many of them at the Cape as we were walking down to the Mill Pond. They would often stop to look at us and Katie would stop dead in her tracks. LOL We also had Canada Geese who use to fly over us in their V formation. Now, we have the acorns to deal with here in CT. I have an oak tree in the front yard and I've never seen as many acorns around the base of the tree as I've seen this year. There was an article in my morning paper about them and apparently New England is seeing tons of acorns this fall but no one can expain why.

Oh, a deer can give a nice kick if they feel threatened, Phyl. I doubt that a dog would bother them again if he got kicked.

Well, I didn't see any deer today but I saw plenty of acorns. LOL For some reason we're having a bumper crop of acorns this season.....the most they've seen in years in New England according to the local paper. I picked up all the acorns a few days ago and there were just as many on the ground today. I also have to check Katie's paws to make sure that she doesn't pick any up.

We have a Black Walnut tree just outside our yard and it has produced a bumper crop. Haven't seen this big a crop since we have lived here. The squirrels have been very busy putting them away for the winter. I am expecting a very bad winter.

Gary, I was thinking the same thing about all the acorns and the bad winter but the article didn't say anything about that. The theory makes sense though. Let's not get out our shovels just yet. Hopefully, they'll be wrong. LOL

Tootles will bark at anything. She somehow knows if something is going on outside when she is asleep and will wake up and bark.
She doesn't miss a thing and is a good watch dog. We are kind of isolated where we live so we don't discourage her barking. Now Becker will just growl very low. He is cute. They are both really big chickens.

Nothing wrong with having a good watch dog, Gary. I think Katie thinks that everyone who comes to the door comes to see her. LOL She loves our new mailman. He sometimes has doggie treats with him.

These two think the same thing. Everyone comes to see them. They are rotten. Some people, Becker tries to talk to he gets so excited.

I'd rather have it that way, Gary than have them unfriendly and have to worry about everyone they meet.

Well, the gentleman who mows my lawn was here today and of course Katie wanted to stay outside and "help" him but I brought her inside. Hector has two dogs so he understands them but he didn't need her help. LOL
