Happy Birthday Kita!!!!

Chelle Sep 28, 2009 10:27 AM

Kita turns 10 years old today. It amazes me so much how after so many years she continues to surprise me as well as keep her "wild child" ways.

She got a hard boiled egg in it's shell to play with this morning before I left for work and she'll get a long walk later today as well. Not sure what else her day will hold, but extra tummy rubs for sure (now that she's no longer so stoic that a belly rub isn't beneath her dignity).

She's such a wonderful girl!

Happy Birthday, Kita! Wow... 10 years old... You are sure to get spoiled on this important birthday!

So, hard boiled egg in the shell... Is that a good toy, or does she break through the shell and get a good treat?

One wonderful way to entertain a dog on a day when they or you can't get out.

Kita's my smart dog. She figures out puzzles very fast, but hard boiled eggs elude her. Really rocks her world when I use hard boiled quail eggs (smaller and harder shells).

Taiko has learned to drop them on the floor relatively fast to break the shell and eat them. Kita savors her egg. She rolls it around with her nose. Makes sure Taiko doesn't grab it from her. Carries it into her crate with her. A hard boiled egg can last hours with Kita. I typically put the dogs in seperate areas of the house to deal with their eggs as they deem appropriate just because Kita gets a bit snarky about hers. She rolls it down t hallway. It's a real treat. Eventually she breaks down and her rolling cracks the shell and she starts to eat it.

Oh the mind games I play with my dogs! I highly recommend it.

This hard boiled egg treat is very interesting to me! Do Kita and Taiko eat the shell too, or just the treasure inside?

Kita eats the shell. Taiko east some of it, but tries to disect.

Hi Chelle,
A few last questions before I try this....would regular chicken eggs work, or would you
recommend I find quail eggs? Would this be considered a 'bland" treat? My Beni does have an incredibly sensitive stomach ... when we go on our walks I know if anyone has slipped him a treat that he is unfamiliar with...and when Beni is not feeling well we are all up for the night...Kari, on the other hand, can handle anything in her tiny cast iron tummy!

I look forward to your reply,

Patty

Sorry- work has me busy and the flu took me out for some time as well.

Regular chicken eggs are fine- we use the finch eggs because the egg eating snake doesn't go through a dozen eggs before they go bad.

As for being a bland treat? Now, Kita's got an incredibly sensitive stomach, but I've got most of her triggers figured out at this point. Although she can't have chicken, chicken eggs do not seem to follow the same rule so for her it doesn't mess her up. If you've got a sensitive stomach dog, I'd start with seeing how just a little bit of an egg you make for yourself is dealt with before doing this experiment. Or use the finch eggs which are smaller.

Do you give probiotics or canned pumpkin when Beni's stomach goes bad? That's the best "cure all" around here as of late. Kids still insist on slipping Kita beef every so often in spite of my continued warnings I will put her in their rooms to sleep when they do. They are heavy sleepers sadly and the threat goes unnoticed.
