ticks and dog color question

anneh Oct 03, 2009 07:25 PM

I have avoided adopting a dark colored dog because my theory is I stand a better chance of spotting a deer tick on a light one and frankly as my dogs sleep with us I am concerned about a tick traveling onto us from the dog and us getting lyme disease. My current dog is light but must admit I don't always see them before they attach on him but usually do. I am looking to adopt another dog and found a sweet one but is mostly black so am hesitant. Are my concerns reasonable or am I being silly, need some encouragement and btw will love any dog I get and seem to be missing alot of good ones with my color phobia Also has anyone used the amber stone necklaces to deter ticks, a friend swears by them.

Ticks can be extremely small and therefore difficult to see. Even on light colored dogs they can be missed. They will sometimes raise the hair on dogs with short, smooth coats. There are ways of avoiding picking up ticks, such as black walnut hull extract or essential oils. I have heard of amber necklaces for repelling ticks, but I have no experience with them.
