comfortable spot

deetu Oct 05, 2009 09:10 PM

My husband and I spent the day separating hostas and transplanting them. Well, I raked back the black mulch, cut an X and pulled the weed barrier back showing dirt. I went to help my husband and when I turned back, there was Ayla, sitting nice and comfortable, right in the middle of the spot on the dirt.

She's always happy to help.

You've got that right, Phyl. Katie is always willing to "help." although she's not as bad as she use to be now that she's getting older.

You know, I thought they were talking again recently because she started carrying around her tennis ball wherever she went.

Don't you just love it when they try to help, Dee? I was raking up some leaves that had fallen on my front lawn and before I knew it Katie was running through them spreading them again. I also have some strange looking green "grass" which I didn't bother with during the summer as long as it was green and blended in with the normal grass. When I started raking all these clumps started coming up leaving big brown spots. Katie also grabbed a couple of those and ran around with them. I finally decided to pull up all this clumpy stuff and put in some grass seed. They say that fall is the best time to plant grass. Now, I have to try and keep Katie off these spots.

I guess so, Sally. I don't really know what's causing this in the grass. It's just in one area near my dogwood tree. I hope the new grass will make an appearance before the real cold weather arrives. Some say the fall is the best time to start new grass. I don't know if this is true or not but we'll see. LOL Perhaps it should have been planted earlier. Oh well, if it doesn't come up, I'll just put new seed down in the spring.

Fall is the best time to plant bushes and trees and perennials here for sure. The roots get to grow and then in spring, the plant is well established and grows well. Not sure how it works up north.

That's interesting, Sally. Perhaps that's why they suggest planting grass in the fall as well. Also, the grass may not get crowded out by the weeds that crop up in the grass during the spring. Of course if we get an early frost, it may not work out very well. If that's the case, I'll just put more seed in next spring.

I was told that it is best to separate the Hostas in the fall or early spring before the leaves really come out. The deer ate the leaves before I separated them so they look like sticks right now but they were pretty big so I got some nice plants out of the 4 I had.

I want to move some wild growing ferns into the garden too but didn't want to push my husband. He was getting upset with all the Hostas holes.

I can't get my camera to unload onto the computer so here is a picture of spring. Ahhh, spring...such a nice season.
