ticked off

deetu Oct 11, 2009 09:01 PM

I found a tick behind Ayla's ear tonight and when I went to use the Ticked Off to get it out, I just couldn't grab it and it's head broke off.
I ended up having to dig it out. It really gave me a hard time and she was really good about it. I used a lot of alcohol between and put Neosporin on after. And a lot of treats, of course.
So I am going to keep an eye on it and make sure I coat her with SkinSoSoft every time she goes out from now on.
I also found one between her eyes and didn't put anything on that one because I didn't want it to get in her eyes.
Speaking of eyes, mine are not as good as they used to be so it so that made it even harder to do.

I'm sorry to hear that, Dee. I haven't seen a tick in a long time here but I rmember when we did have them. I read somewhere if you coat them with vaseline, they will release their grip and come off easily. You might try that if you see another one.

Thing is Mary Lou, this thing has always worked without a problem before. I even use it on myself...even for those little deer ticks that cause Lyme disease.
Made my husband upset. I kept saying "I think I got it" so he told me to stop saying that until I definitely have it. Went thru three different tweezers and kept picking.

Gee, I hope you can work something out, Dee. I know that you live in deer country.

It's good this morning. I bet if I didn't put the Neosporin on, it would have scabbed up already. No swelling and not even tender for me to touch.
Someone on another site said to leave the head in that the body will get rid of it by itself. I would think that would led to pus, swelling and tenderness.

So glad to hear that it's better, Dee. Give Ayla a big kiss for me.

Dee you can use opthammolic antibiotic ointment on the one by her her eye.....or you can put her on oral antibiotics just in case, tick bites often leave it red and irritated for several days.

Dee, don't you use Frontline or Advantix? I found a flea on Nicky about 10 days ago; nearly killed me! Poor baby boy. I realized that I had forgotten their treatment in September, so I snatched them both up and did right then! Nicky had been scratching and I could not figure out why! DUH! Anyway, all is well now

Phyl, I'm really surprised that I haven't found any of these critters on Katie this year with all the rain we've had....perhaps we had too much rain. The critters that are bothering me but not Katie are the squirrels. My oak tree is dropping tons of acorns this year and the squirrels are loving it. The only problem is that they're digging all these little holes on my front lawn to bury the acorns. LOL I can't see any of the acorns in the holes but perhaps they put a layer of dirt on them. I spoke to Squeaker, my resident squirrel, about this but he had no answers for me. LOL

No Phyl, I have problems with chemicals so I don't use them. (I don't like to give Heartworm but know I have to)
Ayla is an inside dog... wee wee pads. She goes out on the deck or will run on the cut grass and driveway. (ticks like tall grass and bushes so they can climb higher to reach animals walking by) If she is going to be out longer with me near the woods, I will rub Skin So Soft on her (much to her displeasure) because ticks don't like that. She has been going to the neighbor's Fall/Halloween set up because apparently a dog marked it and the grass is taller there. A lot of deer walk by that area too. That is where she probably picked them up.
I have found only one flea on her the whole time I've had her. I have squirrels in my backyard too but even my cats don't have fleas.
Glad Nicky is feeling better.

Oh, I see. I bet she got it from the neighbor's too. Hope she stays away from there now.
Thanks, Dee
