Weimaraner Fertility

Omri Oct 17, 2009 05:51 AM

Hello,

I have a pregnant female Weimaraner, aprox. 2.5 years old. She got pregnant by artificial insemination, and right now she’s in the 28th day of her pregnancy. I’ve got conflicting recommendations from two vets concerning nutrition, and I wanted your opinion on this matter. More specifically, my questions are the following:

1.Should she be given calcium now, or at any other stage of her pregnancy? Should she be given calcium during the nursing period? (One of the vets recommended calcium, while the other said it was not only unnecessary but also potentially harmful to the mother and cubs.)

2.Should she be given iron supplement (pills)? (Again, I have conflicting recommendations on this point.)

3. At what stage of her pregnancy should she be transferred to puppy nutrition? (She’s regularly fed Eukanuba dry food.)

Thanks,

Omri

Hopefully someone can come along here and help you out. I have found vets are wonderful for illnesses, but they don't typically breed dogs so their opinions on bitch care come more from books than practical application. Can you find someone in your area that can help you out in person who has welped a few litters before? That may be a great resource for you.
