scared/mean aussie

2dogs Oct 29, 2009 06:51 PM

I have a three year old aussie who is getting progressively worse around children. Since she was a puppy, we have had to guard her around toddlers and basically keep her away from them. She used to be great with kids 5 and older but is now growling and barking at them as well. We just moved into a new neighborhood and a 6 yr old boy across the street came over a few times to throw ball for her. She loved him. Then last week he came with his sister and they were out in the backyard and my aussie came running into the house, children chasing her. I explained to the children that they should not chase a dog. However, they then tried to get near her and she started growling and lunging toward them. I know that quite possibly they could have done something to her, but she is like that with all children. Any advice?

You need to handle this dog differently around children. For one thing, they should not be with you out of your sight for even one second. Look at the articles starting with "Child" or "Children" in the Canine Behavior Series I wrote--link is in my signature. It will explain.
