Rabies Titer Testing

ZeusyGoosey Nov 05, 2009 10:07 AM

My dog Zeus is due for another rabies shot on the 6th of November but I really don't even want to get it. He doesn't receive any other shots besides that one but I've been reading about how a 1 year shot can last up to 14 years.

I don't want to do any type of harm to my dog but I also realize that it's required by the law to have him up-to-date on a rabies vaccination.

Do you recommend a titer test? And if I do that will it even allow me to not get him another rabies shot if it shows that he's immune to it? How does this all work?

Thanks in advance, DR.

In all states that I know of, dogs are required to have current rabies vaccinations. I don't know of any state that allows other proof, such as a titer, to show that the dog is protected against rabies and therefore won't infect someone. I have heard of some town clerks or animal control officers who will accept titers, but that is on an individual basis. If your dog has a medical problem that might be affected by a rabies vaccination, some vets will write a letter asking for a waiver or deferal of the rabies requirement. So you need to speak with your town clerk or animal control officer or vet.
