Need Help/Advice On Sick Baby

Yonkers May 27, 2003 09:21 PM

Hey All,

Well I have never had a snake before...have been huge into lizards and turtles but never a snake...mom has but her foot down before. Well I work at a veterinary hospital and have a semi exotic pet vet. Well the local pet shop called us and one of their baby burmese pythons is very lethargic etc they just got in on a shipment. To make a long story short I have it now and trying tog et it back to health, the pet shop gave it to me so I hope it makes it.

I have had a live baby (pinky mouse) in with it for a couple hours today...no interest. I have it in a 10 gallon tank with a basking bulb and a UVB florescent light. He/she is about 18" long right now. I have given it some Rebound (electrolyte solution) that the vet gave me...like .2 cc of that. I just now sliced the pinky so it is bleeding a little to possibly peak the snakes interest...will see if that works. Any other tricks? This snake arrived at the pet shop about 4 days ago...maybe 5 and has not eaten since there. I know shipping is very stressful but the other 3 siblings are very active and doing good. This one is lethargic and slow moving. Its coloration has improved greatly since I have gotten it (about 6 hours ago).

Now the general questions, I am unsure at this time if I am going to keep it long range or not. But how bad are burmese pythons? I have heard horror stories that they are very mean...this one seems sweet but is also very lethargic. How long before they are the 17' foot I have seen pics of? What other tips/suggestions for a 1st time snake owner? I am moving into my own place around August so seriously considering keeping it if it works out and makes it.

Thanks,
Scott

I would give it time to settle in. Make sure your temp is around 88 degrees on the warm side. Provide something for it to hide in.Do not handle it. Do you see any bubbles coming out of its mouth. If so that is a sign that it has a respitory infection. Give it some fresh water. See if any tiny bugs are crawling around on it.Good Luck!!!

Hey,

No bugs, no discharges.

Alright I will just give it time.

Thanks,
Scott

You might want to try a rat pup rather than a mouse. Do give it time and I personally would probably give it a good soak.
