Seperation Anxiety

Kummiedja Nov 25, 2009 02:03 PM

I have a 5 1/2 year old Pharaoh Hound that suffers from seperation anxiety. (My fault for not dealing with this as a puppy)
My current situation is that he is seriously hurting himself in his crate. If left out of the crate he pees on things in the house and goes crazy when anyone or anything walks by the house. I live on a dead end street, so there is not much foot traffic but I have neighbors who have kids that watching my dogs bark at them through the window seems entertaining.
I usually come home to some type of mess when he is left at home. I have 3 other dogs crated and 1 other one loose in the house with him. Sometimes they get in to small scraps when left alone, so far nothing serious but I'm afraid it is a matter of time.
I have had him on and off Clomipramine for a couple years, but it is not working anymore and I am taking him off of it.
For the last couple months I have been taking him and his sister to work with me and leaving them crated in the car. This is the happiest he has been in a long time! However someone has complained and that is no longer an option. They are VERY quiet and comfortable in the car, but either I loose my job or do something else with my dogs.
I am trying to see if anyone has other ideas or suggestions of what to do! I have battled with this his whole life, and will continue to. I just want him to be happy and not have him destroy my house!

Could you maybe make arrangements for him to stay at someone else's house while you are at work? Maybe someone who would enjoy a dog part time but can't afford veterinary expenses or for some other reason can't really handle a dog full time? That could be a blessing all the way around.

I didn't read Kathy's response, but I know Seperation anxiety of this magnitude is difficult to deal with. Is doggy daycare an option for this guy? How about an elderly friend who is home in the area and may enjoy some company?
