coughing

dogwalker Nov 30, 2009 08:56 AM

My 5mth old puppy began a slight cough the day after Thanksgiving. I had him with his sibling at my mothers. My mother has a 5yr old pit mix that has never been kenneled. Neither of my dogs have been kenneled either, yet Friday morning he had this "fur ball in my throat" kinda cough. It only happens in the AM when he wakes up he coughs a total of about 5 times nothing comes up and he does not cough anymore usually. I have been giving him honey in his food but I'm not sure if I need to do more. He has been acting and eating as normal and BM are fine. Any thoughts? Thanks

This is likely some mucous that accumulates in the dog's throat overnight. If he coughs 4 or 5 times in the morning on getting up, and no more, this is nothing to be concerned about; it is like clearing his throat. If he starts coughing more, it should be looked into. This will probably go away on its own in a short while.

there seems to be a lot of this going around. I suspect that it is a mild upper respiratory viral infection which will go away by itself with time. In the meantime, to give some relief, you can give the dog some guiafenesin syrup, such as Robitussin.

thank you. I had heard rumor of this but was to scared to try it so I did benedryl and with the honey today he seems back to crazy puppy. Slight snorting/sneezing seems more to push out something in his nose. There was some mucus discharge yesterday clear/yellowy today nothing so I think he is doing fine, still giving him the honey.
