Rabies Shot Reaction?!

ZeusyGoosey Dec 04, 2009 12:32 PM

In my later posts, you all know that I was on the fence about allowing my dog to be vaccinated for Rabies. Well, reluctantly, since I was already a month late.. He received his vaccination on the 23rd of Nov. Just yesterday I noticed a golf ball sized lump on his back. Right where the Rabies shot was administered.

I never wanted this shot in the first place so finding this big lump on his back made me want to scream and cry all at the same time.

I took him back and was told that it was because something foreign entered the body and it happens. I was also told to monitor it over a week, it should decrease in size, but if it doesn't we'll need to go another "route".

Today I just checked it and it seems to have gotten smaller. I'm able to breathe a sigh of relief. But my question is, what other damage could occur? This has honestly scared me to death. Could this lump become something more than just what the doctor said?

Zeus is a healthy dog. At a good weight. Eats homemade food (Thanks to the help from Dr. Tobin). Takes an array of vitamins. Could this vaccination be the death of my dog?

Thanks in advance. Oh, and for anyone who lives in Illinois. Give me some good recommendations on a Holistic VET!

This may be what is called a sterile abscess, and as long as it is going away there shouldn't be any problem. The more serious reactions are those that become apparent between 2 and 6 weeks post vaccination, as they are often auto-immune in nature.

It's been about a week now since I found this bump. I've been monitoring it and now I do not notice any change with it. Sometimes if he's laying on his side I can't feel it or it seems smaller. When he's standing I can feel it and it's normal size.

He's eating normal. Drinking. Using the bathroom. Everything seems okay, but I'm concerned. Shouldn't this go away? If not, what happens? What should be my course of action? Thank you, Dr.

If it doesn't go away, have it aspirated.
