diarrhea w some blood

taguti Dec 11, 2009 03:41 PM

Hello Dr
My 6 years dog (labrador) is having diarrhea for the last 2 weeks already. All started after some annual vaccination and teth cleaning procedure (without anesthesia). She vomited twice the following days and than the diarrhea started. Was very liquid and urgent in the first days, but now (the last week) it has feces format but it is very soft and yellow, with a kind of 'gel'around them. She just goes twice a day (usual time), and this morning there was some jelly blood on it, what really concearned me. I took her to the vet again yesterday and she prescribed a probiotic (2xday) and some Flagyl 500mg. The blood test was good and the fecal was negative for giardia. I used to give dry food Blue Buffalo but I am really convinced is a bad idea; I started since yesterday to feed her cooked organic brown rice and cooked organic chicken breast. Please HELP me! I dont want to give her anymore medication and bad stuff - she has a gastritis historic. Thanks a million!! Elga

My dog had those same problems. I had him on Blue Buffalo as well. But I think what you have him on currently is great. I think if you just give it a few days it'll harden up. I heard though that instead of the chicken to try ground beef with brown rice. It's supposed to help bind their tummy's.

I also was told to allow them to fast for a whole day to allow their body to relax since it's inflamed due to the diarrhea. Just allow her to have cold water at all times. Then start her up on the brown rice and ground beef/chicken.

Good luck to you!

This is very good advice. The only thing I would like to add is that if you are using an antibiotic along with a probiotic, you space them as far apart as possible, as the antibiotic will kill the probiotic. If you are giving the antibiotic every 12 hours, give the probiotic 6 hours after each dose of the antibiotic. And continue the probiotic after stopping the antibiotic so as to repopulate the intestines with beneficial bacteria.
