Greens in captivity

pulatus Oct 10, 2003 10:57 PM

Hey all,

As an aside. many years ago I caught 3 adult greens in Arkansas and brought them home. Two settled in well and actually became pretty tame. The third stayed wild, was hard to handle. It ate irregularly. Eventually it died. I did a necropsy and found a small bundle of thin branches in its stomach. Apparently something it inadvertantly ate while fishing. If I would have been more aware I would have noticed that it seemed particularly uncomfortable when held. The branches caused inflammation and eventually infection that I think killed it.

I had a Cyclopion that I caught along the coast in Tx for about 11/2 yrs which died just 3 weeks ago. Like your 2 out of 3 others mine seemed to settle into captivity very well and I even had him eating scented pinks at one time, only in the water though. He never really tamed down and would usually bite and musk me. I am still unsure as to why he died, I let a friend borrow him for a Boy Scout snake identification class and he went w/o being fed for a little over a week. He got pretty lethargic and I thought he was going to die then but I was able to nurse him back to health and to an appropriate weight. However a few weeks ago i was to lazy to go catch my own fish like usual and opted to buy them from a pet-co(I consider shopping at Pet-co a sin,and only bought feeder animals there but even that is over with). Well the tank was absolutely disgusting with atleast half of the fish dead and floating, I realized that the bacteria in the water from the dead fish probobaly would not be to good for my snake, but got some anyways. He took them all down and held them down for a 3days, when I went to sleep that night he still had them down when i checked on him around 3am that morning he had died. I am assuming he died b/c of the fish from Pet-Co. I have a clarkii and Red-Striped Ribbon that have shown know ill effects as of yet from the fish. I really would like to know why he died, he is in my freezer so perhaps i'll have someone do an autopsy.
Sorry to hear about urs, what was the fate of ur other 2 ? Are they still around ? Never shop at Pet-Co........Scott Wahlberg. Sorry for rambling on!
