Doggy Diapers?

peejpm Feb 16, 2010 10:21 AM

I have an older beagle. Not sure of her age as we got her as a rescue. She is at least 10-13. She pees all over my house now. We just had to pull up our carpet downstairs because it smelled of dog urine. She pees in our living room, and in my daughter's room. Not sure why, because she will also go to the door to be let out. Anyway, we are at our wits end with her. We were thinking of the potty patch, but she does not have one particular spot she pees in. So, I was thinking of doggy diapers. I saw a website that has a washable one. Anyone have any experience with this? Sounds like a HUGE hassle cuz she goes out all the time, but I am tired of her peeing in my house!

I understand that some older dogs do have a problem like this. But have you had the dog vet checked to see if there is a urniary infection or bladder problem?

Ya, she's been checked, several times. She has done this for years. She does get uti's often.

Ugh, this does not sound fun. My dog would freak if I put a doggy diaper on her. Can you crate your dog when no one is there to watch her?

The UTIs probably started the problem and it's now partially habit and partially necessity.

I guess if it were me, I'd try to modify her diet and water intake (put her on soft food or soak her food) and use suppliments to boost her urinary system instead of just continuing to let her pee in the house. I'd confine her to a room or area where she can safely go potty while you can't supervise her so the habit becomes less. It takes about 4 weeks to undo a habit.

Even though there's nothing seriously wrong with her, I'd try to find a good vet that can work with you to boost her health. Yes, she's getting older, but chronic UTIs do not have to be something she just deals with as she gets older. Any vet who makes you think that way needs to be switched for a vet who knows how to care for geriatric pets.

Well, I did a little more research and decided not to get the diaper. There is a chance it can cause skin irritation.

There is no rhyme or reason when or where she decides to go. Sometimes she will go to the door to be let out, and other times she will find a place to pee. She's driving me crazy!

Has she had her kidney function checkled and a full senior panel done? If not please have that done first. Also if she has a history of UTI's I's almost consider treating her as though she has one. Giving cranberry pills daily to acidify her urine and make sure she is getting enough water (I know it seems like she must be if she is peeing all the time) but if her BUN creatine or general kidney levels are compromised or in distress she needs MORE water to keep her hydrated as it passes trhough so quickly.

Now onto the diapers. We use them on our incontinent cats..... it's quite a show. We also have to but a 3-6 month old onsie over it since cats can wiggle out of anyhting! We did use them with Tiko our 17 year old Shiba too - but she peed so much overnight that I felt bad that she had to sit in it and ofen I would have to bathe her in the morning. So I would say that they are good for up to 2-3 hours depending on the amount of output. Tiko peed gallons it seemed overnight. So we jsut used pee pads and gated her in the kitchen. She also had a very overiszed crate with lots of blankeys and pee pads that I could wash or toss for overnights.

Tiko being so sweet and so old didn't mind the diapers - it was a struggle to get tehm on sometimes but once on she left them alone.

Good luck!
