Scary....

Shboom Feb 16, 2010 06:29 PM

Had a bit of a scary time last night. I had gotten home from work and started the regiment of drops for Beni. About an hour later... not sure what happened but I'm suspecting Beni inadvertantly walked upon Toshi.. she didn't like it and a fight ensued. After breaking up the fight I checked the dogs and sure enough Beni had a laceration on the outer corner of the left eyelid... the same eye I have been protecting for over 3 years. The cut was about 8mm long but what I thought was the worst part was that there were only about 2mm of margin left before the rim of the eye was open. I cleaned the cut... put on some anti-steroidal antibiotic and called my vet to see if she could squeeze him in. They could so I brought him in and she checked him over and also did a stain test to make sure the eye itself wasn't compromised which thankfully it wasn't. I watched Beni all the rest of the night to make sure things were okay. This morning the cut was mostly closed over but I was still able to get in some of the B-N-P ointment. I called Cornell as a precaution this morning just in case they may want to see him a week earlier than his next appointment. I was actually more nervous about that 2mm margin when giving Beni his drops... I didin't want to rip it further open. When the doctor called back I explained all that had happened and all that I was doing.
The doctor seemed to think that everything was going okay but that if I felt better I could bring him in on this Thursday instead of next Thursday. Since Beni was looking and acting fine I decided to wait until next week but will continue to monitor Beni for any signs of an infection or what have you.

Bob, thst really must have shaken you up terribly! I'm glad to hear that all your doctors feel everything is going to be OK, and I hope you get some sleep tonight. I'll keep you and Beni in my prayers, for sure.

Oh the perils of large families!

Scary is right! Wonder what made them decide to go at it? I'm glad the outcome for the most part isn't any more severe. Paws crossed it continues to be that way. Give those two a minor reprimand from me. It's naughty to fight!

Beni isn't any worse for wear after the incident the other night. The cut seems to be clean and shut with no signs of an infection though I'll keep applying the B-N-P for at least another day. I still think Beni must have walked on or bumped into Toshi and at that she might have been startled. Because of the cataract and the meds... Beni's eyesight gets restricted even more and I'm not sure how much downward peripheral vision he has. At any rate I took it all in stride and was just glad that the eye itself wasn't involved.

I'm assuming Beni and Toshi have kissed and made up?

Glad to hear the scare is over!

Winona that is great news about Asher! Give that good boy a scratch behind the ears for me!!

As for Beni the area where the cut was looks very good... so it looks like I dodged another bullet!
