Can you help my dog eat slower

delphys_mom Apr 09, 2010 09:40 PM

I have a 5lb 1yr old Mini Doxie and she is currently on a mix of cooked meat and kibble diet. She eats her meat in about 8 seconds and i don't think thats very healthy. Do you have any concerns about that? Also i really would like to put her on a all real food diet by all the recomendations i can find are for dogs over 15lbs. Do you have any recomendations are how i would balance her diet. She only eats twice a day do do our schedules. Thanks for all the help.

You can get her to eat slower by putting large round stones in her food bowl so that she has to keep nosing them out of the way. Make sure they are large enough that she cannot swallow them.
Another way is to give her large pieces of meat so that the has to chew them into smaller pieces. Beef neck bones work well for this, if you can find a reliable source. You can also use chicken, but remove the long bones, as these can splinter into long sharp shards. All that a dog needs to get is meat, bone, plain yogurt or probiotic, and omega 3 fatty acids, as from fish oil or flax seed oil. If you use whole chicken, remove the bones from the legs (drumstick bone and thigh bone), the first wingbone, but leave all the other bones for him to chew.
