Hello, I could really use some advice. I have a nine yr. old lab. About a month ago I took him to the vet because he seemed to be having pain in his lower back. The vets first suspect was arthritis, but once xrays were taken his bones looked very healthy. Her next suspect was possibly a pinched nerve so she gave him meds and sent us on our way. The meds seemed to really help; he acted like a puppy again, but as soon as they ran out the pain came back to a lesser degree. Two weeks went by and I noticed he lost about 20 lbs and he began to urinate on himself, and there was blood in his urine, so we raced back to the vet. They re examined the xrays only to find a mass on his bladder. Unable to do a biopsy because he was in so much pain they blew up his bladder with air and took a urine sample. They found that his bladder wall was severly thickened and his white cell count was very high. They diagnosed him with bladder cancer (TCC)and gave him 1 month to live. Surgery is not possible because they would have to take out his entire bladder.
So here is what I have done so far. He is on proxicam, and was on an antiboitic (which ran out a few days ago). I have done alot of research and decided to put him on an all protien/fat (meats of all sorts, sweet potatoes, brocolli, etc.) diet (i also put omega 3 fatty acid fish oil in his food). He also takes flatseed/cottagechees twice daily. I have him on dulcolax twice daily because he is having an extremely hard time defecating. I put ph protector drops in his water to make his system more alkaline, and Ive tried given him the supplemt astragalus.
He was doing very well for about a week. He put on ten lbs, scarfed done the flaxseed oil and cottage cheese, and had alot more energy. He was also taking his meds like a champ. He still had problems urinating and defecating but this is exected. About 2 days after the antibiotic ran out we began having problems again. We have to force him to take his medicine, and he refuses to eat the flaxseed oil and cottage cheese. He is very dehydrated and his energy level is down.
So here are my questions. Is there any thing else i could be doing. I have done so much research and there are so many things on the internet i dont know what to trust. Do you recommend any supplements or herbs that i havent tried yet? One specifly I have looked at is paw paw. Have you heard about this and if so what do you think? Am I giving him any thing currently that I dont need to be? I know the chances are slim for survival right now but this is my kid. I dont want to look back and say I didnt try everything I could to get him better. I'm sorry for rambling so much but I figured its best to give as much information as possible. Any advice on this would be greatly helpful and appreciated. Thank you for your time.
Jenn
