Food for a dog with Liver issues

kiko63 May 19, 2010 03:00 PM

Hi,
I have a shiba inu who is 3 years old and has been diagnosed with higher than normal liver enzymes. I think that is what they call it. He is on a low protein diet. He is currently on Reduced calorie Natural Balance, 16 % protein. He takes 200mg of SamE a day, Lactolose syrup, and vitamin E suplement. He is also a very picky dog. He does not eat very well. He very rarely eats a whole meal. I would like to give him something else but i am not sure what to give. I wouldnt mind making the food. Just not sure what to make. He is a little under weight and the vet would like to see him gain a few pounds. If you give him a treat, he will eat that no problem. any suggestions?

Thanks
Joanne

You don't say what the cause of the elevated liver enzymes is. Some possibilities are damage to the liver, or an inborn liver shunt. To protect the liver, give him 1 capsule of milk thistle twice a day. Feed a diet of 2 parts cooked brown rice to one part pureed raw beef liver, along with 1/2 tsp bone meal 1/2 tsp cod liver oil and 1 tbsp plain yogurt daily. Also give 1 tablet Standard Process Hepatrophin PMG twice a day.
