Fur on back where tail curls

semni May 23, 2010 04:13 PM

My Shiba has a tightly curled tail that rests on the lower portion of his back. Ever since he was young his tail has matted down the fur where it touches the lower part of his back. However, after a bath the fur on his back always perked back up again. He's now 8 years old and I've noticed that he's actually losing his fur in this area of his back. Rather than having a fluffy undercoat and a rich overcoat, he just has stubby short hair. I've parted the fur, looked at his skin in this area, and it looks normal. Does anybody have any idea what might be going on?

Hi Semni and welcome to you and your dog to the Shiba forum. Since you have already examined the skin and not seen anything untoward regarding skin issues there could be a few other possibilities. If you have noticed any other places where the fur seems to be thinning you might want to consider a thyroid check. It could hormonal in nature. Or it could also be something as simple as your Shiba getting older and the hair becoming a little brittle and not growing back as it once had. For now I would do a thorough check from nose to tail to see if there are any other places this is occuring. Please post back with any other findings... btw... what is your Shibas name?
