Humid hide idea, what do you all think?

RedQuake Oct 11, 2003 01:49 AM

Hi again hehehe, its 2am and i can't sleep, got to much running through my head......one of which is this idea.

I have a reptile humidifier that i was using for my crested gecko Zeek to keep the humidity up. It was doing its job to well so i stopped using it.

I was thinking, since i'm building a unit to hold all but 3 tanks, i could use a splitter to link each humid hide with air tubing to the humidifier, thus keeping them humid all the time. The instructions for the unit says that the larger the air pump the more humidity can be delivered. I have a huge pump so i'm set. My only reservation would be that it could increase the relative humidity of the entire enclosure, but since the hides have a substrate in them that can soak up the moisture i'm doubtful this would happen.

Any thoughts on this. I'm not trying to be lazy in not misiting each hide every day or so, i just think it would be less stressful than trying to coax out a gecko from the hide so i can mist it.

Thanks for all opinions and suggestions

Hi Red, interesting ideas. I’ve been toying with the idea of setting up an automated Uroplatus cage. It would need to include a very small AC unit, a misting system, and a fogger, all on timers and thermostats. Quite a task, but I look forward to it.

I can’t say I’ve worked with a reptile humidifier, but I’m guess it’s similar to a fogger. I don’t think it would be a good idea for your leos. It would be very hard to keep the high humidity concentrated to the humid hide, even with a lot of substrate in there. But I think a small drip system could be used to keep humid hides, nice and moist. Maybe someone else has experience with this? Anyhow let us know how things turn out, or if you have any more ideas. Good luck!

Wow you do have alot of work ahead of you. Sounds very interesting too, i'd love to see a pic when your done.

I'll have to rethink things a bit but a drip system would be good as long as it didn't drip right on the geckos. Its not as urgent a thing as getting this unit built to hold the geckos so that gives me more time to work out the kinks

Thanks for your input

Do you use aquariums with open or screen tops or do you have tubs on a rack? Either way I think a humidifier would make it too humid even if they were split 10 ways. However, I definitely think it could work if you set the humidifier up to a timer for say...
30 minutes a day. Just monitor it and if it seems too humid, try 15 minutes a day. Calibrate it and let us know how it works out for you.
