Giardia question

anneh Jun 12, 2010 04:10 PM

Please help I am so panicked. A friend brought over a shelter dog and stayed the 2days/1night with me, the dog defecated several times in my yard, I believe I got it all picked up (no diarrhea). Now I am told the dog has giardia (but it was non shedding giardia whatever that means). I am so worried about this and looking it up online panics me when I read all the problems it can cause. My vet said as the dog was only here such a short time she would prefer to test my dog's stool in a month vs treating him in case he has it. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Giardia has been associated with diarrhea and intestinal upset. That said, careful testing found giardia in up to 80% of puppies, but certainly not 80% of puppies have diarrhea. So while it is associated with diarrhea, its presence does not necessarily cause diarrhea. If your dog does develop loose stool, treat for giardia, but don't panic, as simply being in the same yard as a dog with this parasite does not necessarily mean the dog is now suffering from a disease.
