Uber Up-Date & Thanks from Bekki

Sandy-in-Georgia Jul 01, 2010 01:55 PM

Bekki called this morning to say that Uber made it through a very difficult night. In true pharaoh fashion, he is hanging in and fighting with all his strength using that stubborn, strong PH will we all know and love. It will be a long recovery but physically and financially.

Please understand as much as she would like to speak personally with each of you who have called to offer support and express concern, she simply can’t right now. Bekki who an Air Force nurse can not receive or make calls while on base. She is at work today. Bekki is totally appreciative and encouraged with your ’buddy checks’. Please try to be patient and understand she does have restrictions but will get back to each of you as quickly as she can. Understandably her time and attention is on Uber and the rest of her pack. Again, her most sincere ‘Thank You’ to all. She’ll keep us posted with Uber’s progress.

Please continue sending healing vibes and your prayers. Uber and Bekki are aware of them... and need them.

Back story … Bekki lives near Stone Mountain a few minutes drive due east of Atlanta with her pharaohs, Trey, LaLa and Uber as well as Bridget who is a Chihuahua mix. And Cobalt a rescued silver tabby cat-boy. Her neighborhood is busy and residential with smaller lots. Her 6 ft wooden fenced backyard backs up to a natural uncultivated, wild greenbelt. No humans go there - just birds and smaller woodsy critters. That is part of the charm of her place - no backyard neighbors. Out the back door and after the first flat 50/60 feet or so of lawn, her property drops off sharply into a ravine with a seasonal stream. The slope is too steep to mow so it is covered with native vegetation. All of Bekki’s back yard is fenced with the stream well beyond the fencing.

On Tuesday night, out for their final potty of the day, the girls (LaLa and Bridget)quickly did their business and came inside but the boys (Uber and Trey)encountered an enormous copperhead snake. Speculation is that the first strike hit Uber’s shoulder, he turned to look (WTF??) and the second strike hit him in the mouth (possibly open) followed by another strike to his shoulder. When Trey came to assist he too was struck above his eye. Thank Heavens it missed his eyeball itself.

With the three hard and fast strikes, it seems dear little Uber received all the venom. Trey escaped with puncture wounds and bruising. The next day Bekki found copperhead snake dead near her back door -- most likely killed by Trey.

She heard a dog scream and through the door came her two bloody, mouth-foaming dogs. Uber started to stagger. Bekki scooped up both Uber and Trey and rushed them to the e-clinic. First thing Wednesday morning, Uber was transferred to the Specialty Clinic where he remains in intensive care under 24 hr watch. How long Uber will stay is unknown at this time.

Updates and comments are being documented on Facebook. As of noon today Atlanta time, the vets are seeing slight improvement but improvement nonetheless.

Thank you all.

Sandy

Uber (pharaoh Hound) snake bite funds

Update 3pm 1 Jul 2010:

Uber has taken a turn for the worse. His shoulder bite has stopped oozing and looks ok in the grand scheme, the ones on the neck are bleeding more and his labs have suddenly dipped below normal. He is not clotting at the moment. He will be getting a plasma transfusion and I told them that we have donors and they don't use donors but a blood bank so it can all be properly tested.

Sandy-in-Georgia Jul 01, 2010 08:19 PM

I just got back from visiting Uber in the ICU. He looks worse but he feels better. He was receiving his transfusion while I was there, so I couldn't stay long as he had to be closely monitored. His eyes lit up when he saw me and he wagged his tail like crazy.....

And the vet tech said that they put a pillow on his tail bc he wagged it so much they were afraid he was going to get crate tail. He tried to stand up to kiss me. Tech said he can't bark, but he has figured out how to whistle to get their attention.

They said he is eating well and as long as his body accepts this blood, he should be ok...he will more than likely need surgery in a few days to take care of the compartment syndrome ...although medically he is doing worse, I feel like he is going to be ok....keep praying!

NEW: 8:45PM update: OMG!!! I'm so happy...it's just a small step of progress but I feel like I just won the lottery!!! Uber handled his transfusion with no problems, they will repeat bloodwork in the morning, he ate a whole bowl of food and when they opened the crate to potty him, he bolted out and ran to the back door, did his business and then did a few zoomies in the back yard... they had to corral him back in, because running just isn't a good idea right now, but they said he is fast! I said oh guess his shoulder isn't bothering him, they said not at the moment...:D I asked the doc what she thinks and she said, she thinks it's safe to say we are AT the bend....

I have a minute to respond. First of all, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL THE WORDS OF LOVE AND SUPPORT!!! I am just so overwhelmed! Dog people are awesome! Thank you also to those following on facebook, where I put updates and pictures as I get them. Please be careful...the pictures are disturbing and not appropriate to post here.

Secondly here is the latest update: 2 Jul 2010 6:30AM Update: The tech said that he slept comfortably, no issues through the night and she believes the swelling might have gone down a little. They were just getting ready to draw the labs. His regular doctor comes in at 8am, and will review his night activity and come up with the daily plan and will call me later with a report.

Thirdly, I have learned so much about snakes and copperheads in the last few days. Hindsight is certainly 20/20. I have an area of my yard that I keep completely natural to encourage the dogs' natural instincts. Well it literally came back to bite me. In doing so, I set up a plush resort for mice and snakes. I never worried about snakes, thinking they would not come on the property with dogs running about. I thought it cared more about self preservation. Obviously not true. I also found out that copperheads are aggressive and will chase you down if they feel threatened.

So the very least you could do to get the snake education you need and others in your area, if you are a member of any dog club that meets in person, have them bring in someone to talk about snake safety as we are in prime season for copperheads right now in the southeast; and see if they can offer a snake aversion clinic. I have yet to find one here in the Atlanta area, so I have asked my kennel club to put one together.

Again keep fingers and paws crossed and hope the turn in the road is here.

Thank you with all my heart from me and my gang....
