Cineraria maritima potency

RoseDovey Jul 19, 2010 12:18 PM

Both my dogs have cataracts, and I saw on here where you recommended Cineraria maritima eye drops. The problem is the only ones I can find are the Similasan brand that is a potency of 6x. You said you preferred a lower potency, so I was wondering why that was. Would it be okay to use 6x if that's all I can find?

Also, is there any ingredient I should make sure they DON'T have before using people eye drops for dogs? I was wondering because I doubt I could find something that was plain Cineraria maritima.

Thanks so much for your time!

I have not been able to find Succus cineraria maritima, which was the original remedy used to treat cataracts, for some time. Similisan's cataract eyedrops contain cineraria maritima in a 6x potency, which works for some animals, but not as well as a more concentrated form. It is worthwhile trying it if that is all that is available to you, but you could also ask your vet to have it prepared by a compounding pharmacy in a lower potency. I have found a 2x potency to work quite well, without causing any irritation to the eye.

l-carnosine eye drops are also supposed to help - you can do a search on carnosine and cataracts for more info. The only ones I've been able to find are the Brite Eye drops by life extension - they have them at www.iherb.com , but I dont' know how well they work.
