Flying your dogs to the National

kaije Jul 27, 2010 09:46 PM

Since I just booked my guys to the National, I wanted to remind people of a few things:

Most Airlines have a heat embargo from 15 May 2010 to 15 Sept 2010 if the temperatures are over 80 degrees, and this applies to riding as checked baggage.

Sending as priority parcel cargo (Usually will ride on the same plane with you but as cargo, depending on airline)is more costly, but it doesn't have the embargo.

A little trick, if you are active duty military or know someone who is and they are willing to sign as sender, Americaan Airline will ship for 1/2 the cargo rate.

The airline are becoming stricter on flight requirements. Must have a healtch certificate in hand to present to the counter that is less than 15 days old. The crate must be big enough for the dog to stand, turn and lay down comfortably. There absolutely cannot be any sedating of the animal as the pressure changes in the plane could compromise the dogs breathing. If you do sedate make they don't appear to be sedated or they won't let you fly.

Also plan on picking them up (if flown cargo) at a separate location away from baggage claim.

Also review Project Vivi's flying safety checklist....

See ya'll at the National.

Good information. Best to be prepared but every airline has different rules and every employee interprets them differently in my experience.

Delta didn't want to see Journey's health certificate when I brought her home from Memphis almost two years ago (has two years really gone by already? All they cared about was the $150.00 for the carry-on privilege.

At least she was not subjected to being x-rayed with the rest of the luggage. I would have canceled and rented a car had than been the case. Are dogs sent as cargo protected from being exposed to ionizing radiation? Might be a good question to ask when traveling with dogs in cargo.
