Hi Lori - I was wondering the same thing, as I wasn't there.
I do know that the judge is not required to give out either SELECT awards if he/she chooses. Just seemed unusual.

The day before the judge, Lynne Schanzle, choose to not give any selects at all. This was the first time I saw that, even though I knew it was optional.

Judges are allowed to withhold ribbons in ALL classes, but you rarely see it. I think in 22 years of showing, I seen them withhold about 3 times. Once, they did give ribbons, but withheld 1st place, so no one could go back in to compete for Winners.

So I wondered if the with holding of Select was going to be as rare.. apparently not.

I still think it is odd to award the bitch, but not the dog. Especially with the quality of dogs that were there. I'm really thinking this is an error. Hopefully if there is a select dog out there, they will let us know!

It is an award that counts toward a grand championship title -- here's a link to the info on the Grand Championship rules.

I think it may not be as rare with SELECTs as with the other ribbons. I think some judges are still trying to figure it out - and I think other judges may disagree with it.
I was at a show recently where 2 behaviors occured - 1 judge was awarding the SELECTS to CLASS dogs (which can't happen - so the award was meaningless and no one would get credit)! and at the same show another judge was not awarding ANY!! The handlers reported this to the rep and the judge was spoken to - I did overhear some of the conversation where the judge was told that he needed to have a REASON why he withheld SELECT if there was an eligible dog.

I also think that judges were not aware that in addition to BOB get Grand CHampion points, that BOS got points too (if they were available) - and not just SELECTS. It was late in JUNE when the AKC issued a much better document showing how all of this works. This document clearly called out how the BOS points worked (where the previous one pretty much left BOS out).
