A Tragic & Sad event

Always careful when you decide to fly dogs... Airlines are ultimately responsible, but owners also should use common sense. Read the following:

FYI - this link gets you to a list of other links. Click on the one starting with LINK. That takes you to a page with a lot of links to stories. You have to scroll waaay down to find the story. It's bare bones.

Very sad!

It is very sad for the puppies. However, reading between the lines . . . seven puppies? Really? I can't think of a single good, ethical reason to ship 7 puppies, other than a puppy mill situation.

Not Seven ....

"Airline spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said Wednesday the shipper put 14 puppies aboard Flight 851, which was scheduled to leave Tulsa at 6:30 a.m. but was delayed an hour by storms in Chicago"

I am sorry for the link... but I see that everybody now is able to find the article and the news. Carmen, I agree with you... It is crazy to ship so many puppies, unless, like you say, it is a puppy mill!!! ... However, the point is that some Airlines simply do not follow their own restrictions and guidelines, including forbidding to load or fly pets when the temperatures outside are too high or too low. in other words they do not treat animals like humans, but simply "cargo" like luggage (hopefully they do not throw crates like I have seen they throw luggage sometimes !!!)... It does not matter if it is one or seven puppies... the point is that they are dead. In the article they also mention that there has been more than 200 dogs dead in the past few years... this is tragic and even criminal for me. The plane Captain should also have known what is going on, unless the puppies died by heat exhaustion outside the plane while waiting to be boarded and nobody communicated with the Captain that there will be pets onboard. In any case the Airline is responsible. This is why I believe a pet should always fly with the owner/agent who double check if everything is going ok, who question where the pet is, talks to flight attendant and the captain and/or the ground personal at the gate, who let everybody know about his/her pet. Some airlines also supply the owner/agent with papers which show exactly where the animal is, and the Captain should check temperatures, pressure and lights and talk to the ground personnel inquiring about this pet, because he should know that the pet should be treated as a passenger, even if he flies in a special area underneath the passengers. I have posted this article to make one more time people aware of the danger of flying a pet, not necessarily because it is dangerous, but because of irresponsible people and corporations who one cannot simply trust. What has happened is criminal and responsible people should be judge because of this.

My thoughts too Carmen. But as long as puppy mills make money and the states can collect taxes they will exist. It is sad commentary on the value system prevalent in this country.

"Exactly what Thom & I were talking about tonight. Especially since they shipped from Tulsa. God only knows what condition they were in before they even made that flight. Problem for the rest of us however is that I can see the airlines deciding it's not worth the bad PR and banning all of us from flying our dogs.

I'm surprised any airline would fly dogs from the airport in Tulsa this time of year. Having lived in O.K. for several years, and flying out of the Tulsa airport many times...I can say it's hot as hell there this time of year. Just a sad situation.

Yep...Antlers was on a regular route. A lot of the puppies went to pet stores up north. I was in a huge building once...small dogs in cages stacked as high as you could reach. Lots of back yard breeders took puppies there and sold them. I was being nosy, but while I was there the woman asked me if I had any puppies to sell. People who buy puppies from pet stores would be shocked to see where these puppies came from.

I can only imagine how hot that plane was even early in the morning.

Puppy mills are common in the midwest. Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma are the the main ones. Little regulation exists and the state governments love the tax revenue the mills generate.

This IS very sad indeed, but before we get all "the sky is falling" especially before the National...I would like to add that I have flown my dogs ON AMERICAN in their cargo and have not had any issues.

Yes we must take precautions, but I believe (my own assumption, no facts to back this up) that this is a small percentage of how many animals actually fly cargo without incidence. Bad and horrible things happen everywhere. If you heard that 20 people chocked on an instrument at the dentist, would you stop going to the dentist all together? Probably not, so be cautious, but don't as they say, throw the baby out with the bathwater...

Just my two cents worth....

I agree with you Bekki. The bad thing is that you know as well as I do, we'll never know the "whole" story of what really happened.
