Why are we blaming the poor dogs for this hot weather! LOL Where did that expression come from anyway?

Why are we blaming the poor dogs for this hot weather! LOL Where did that expression come from anyway?

Good question, Cheryl but I don't have an answer for you. I don't think people walk around on a real hot day with their tongues hanging out panting like a dog might. Perhaps the heat bothers a dog more than it does a human...don't know. We've cooled down a bit from the mid 90's to the high 80's. I don't think it feels much cooler though. Thank God I bought my new air conditioner for downstairs when I did. It's very hard to find the A/C you want in any store right now since they're almost sold out of all air condtioners. Hope you're staying cool. Here's a "cool" picture for you. Maybe it will help. LOL

I'm not crazy about snow either, Dee. I keep telling my friend, Carmella that we don't have to shovel heat but we do snow. LOL

Okay, this is what I found online:
The term Dog Days was coined in ancient Rome, and was named after the star Sirius, the Dog Star, which is the brightest star besides the sun. It was thought that due to the rising and setting of Sirius at around the same time of the sun each day this time of year, that Sirius added it's heat to the sun's heat, thereby making the days hotter. Hence the term Dogs Days.
Other ancient cultures had their own myths about Dog Days, all centering around the rising and setting of the Dog Star. Some cultures even sacrificed a dog on the first day of Dog Days in an attempt to appease Sirius' wrath, which in their opinion, was the cause of the intense heat during this time of year.
Our modern day usage of the term has little to do with Sirius or his alleged wrath. We use the term Dog Days to refer to anything that is slow, lazy or languishing.
I like Marion Webster's second definition for the term Dog Days-a period of stagnation.
We are in the middle of Dogs Days now, I think the best way to appease the wrath of Sirius is to gather up my canine friends and go stagnate on the couch in front of the air-conditioning for awhile.
Interesting, but I like his last idea

Phyl you beat me to it, I was going to find the answer to that question. Very interesting. We are ready for some cooler weather. The pups go out and do what they have to and then rush back in.
