Worthy's SLO toenail condition showed up last July and now 13 or so months later it seems to fully be in remission. All the nails have filled back in. The Omega 3 fish oil capsules that he will always need have his coat looking amazing, too!
We took him to the veterinarian for a regular check up last week, and he was pleased with the condition of the nails. Worthy is about 4 pounds too heavy, so the vet said to cut his calories just about 5%, for a very slow weight loss. I always ask the vet about my dog's weight on every check up, because vets tend not to mention that unless you ask. He then evaluates the dog very carefully and gives much better weight information than I could figure out for myself. It is so much better to change the weight up or down when it's just a small amount off, than when the fat percentage has gotten way off.
Worthy did not need any medication for the SLO at all, just a very careful vitamin program. And he will always need it. I'm sure it is due to the ever-growing Poodle coat. He is a black, large Standard Poodle, and he has a VERY thick coat. That takes tons of nutrition. Apparently in his case, the coat took from the nails. But things seem to be back in balance now. And wow, he is handsome!
