Fresh air in the rodent room.

MarkS Oct 11, 2003 08:37 AM

I'm in the process of adding on to my house. My wife wanted a bigger kitchen and dining room so we decided to add a 42" X 14" section onto the back of the house. My only stipulation was that we put in a full basement underneath it and part of that would become my expanded herp room. (I previously had a 14" X 12" spare bedroom for the herps) With this addition I'm almost quadrupaling the size of my herp room and I would like to use part of that as a rodent room. My plan would section off part of the basement into about a 10" X 14" room. Cinderblock walls on three sides with a concrete floor. My question is what could I do to keep the smell down? I plan on venting the room to the outside and having some kind of fan/blower mechanism drawing fresh air into the room and venting smelly rat air to the outside. What kind of materials do I need to accomplish this? What kind of setup can I build in this room to make sure the smell doesn't permeat into the rest of the house? What are some other features that I could add to this room to make rodent keeping easier and more efficient? Thanks for any help...

And Ralph... THANK YOU for this weeks journal showing how you build your rodent racks. You make it look so easy, even I could probably build my own. I'm probably going to be using your plans for building my own racks. (once the rest of the house is done)

the genaral idea i have had is to suck the air out of the rodent room or rack to the outside. that way, depending on where you live, the rodents are getting cool air in the summer ( a/c ) and warm air in the winter ( furnace ) without having to have a seperate climate control. I've done a little research on negative pressure rooms in hospitals and they always state that is is better to get fresh air and a negative pressure environment by sucking the air out of the room. same idea for rodents. the other thought i've had is once the smelly air is out of the room and outside you still don't want to smell it in the area. so use a duct up the side of the house or up some other vertical structure to vent the air up and away. good luck, chris
