My adopted Dog and helping him adjust

Sarahc860 Aug 19, 2010 02:38 PM

Hi,
So I rescued a very lovable terrier mix and he's doing well. This is my first rescue dog and I'm learning on how to help him adjust. He is slowly adjusting but isn't really sure about the freedom he has. I know it takes time. The one problem I am having is that he wont go to the bathroom in our yard. He has to be walked where other dogs have been, I assume this is because of the shelter. My only concern is that I go back to school soon and I want him to feel comfortable going out to the yard through his doggie door. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get him to go?

Thanks for the Rescue!

I assume you have a fenced in yard?

I would start by taking the dog out on lead and staying in your yard until they are finishing potting. Then a treat might be an incentive after and lot of praise. When the dog scent gets in the yard then it's the dogs home and yard.

Doggie Dog: hold doggie door open and call from the outside with a treat and same for coming in. Shut the door and see is they will go through. This might take sometime to teach don't rush.

Be gentle, kind and soft words always.
Remember you are learning about each other give it time.

Let me know how things are going and tell me more about the new one. Name, age and anything also you care to share.
