WORD OF CAUTION FOR THOSE FLYING DOGS...

kaije Sep 12, 2010 09:23 AM

TO THE NATIONAL.....

For those traveling to the National this week via airline: CHECK the date on your health certificate. My kids went in on Friday 9/10/2010, and they wrote 8/10/2010!!! It is Sunday and my vet is not open. We have missed our flight and it will cost 100.00 to change it or 150.00 to cancel and redeposit my miles to try for tomorrow.

That and the outragous baggage check fees, it will be cheaper to just drive, so now rushing around on a Sunday getting car ready for long road trip!!! UGH!!!

Bekki,

I hope you made it off okay. My worst experience was flying to NYC for Westminster 3 years ago. My vet failed to write on the Health Certificate it was okay for India to fly in cold weather. Yes, she had her coat on and fligths were cancelled the day before, so all airlines were pretty much filled up and they would not let me fly out with her. I called my vet and had him fax another certificate stating she could fly in cold weather. We had to take a much later flight to NY and my taxi van did not arrive due to them cancelling my pick-up and many hours later at the airport, a van arrived and we made it to the hotel, tired and stressed and India would not go outside in the cold dark, dirty snow to peepee. What a mess.

One more good reason to just say no to flying!

***Because the vets don't know how to fill out a health certificate? Don't think so Sam ... "this" time, the airlines were innocent

Don't believe it is because vets do not know how to fill out Health certificate, but human error.

I'd like to think this message board helps others to become more aware and check details so future errors will be detected.

Everyone have a safe trip to the National where ever to are coming from.

I agree wholeheartedly with you Linda. It is best to dot the Is and cross the Ts early on and be otherwise prepared. I find it helpful, when planning anything at all, to mentally walk thru the process and try to anticipate anything that might be a hindrance.

You can't thing of everything but problems can at least be minimized this way.

Actually, if you reread what I wrote, I think you'd see I was teasing Sam about this being another reason not to fly with your dogs. Maybe this year Santa will bring you a sense of humor for Christmas

Not at all Pam. I admit I am prejudiced against flying because of the Patriot Act. I will forever be subjected to suspicion, being treated like a criminal by the screeners and "female assistance" because of hip implants - of which I have x-pray proof and a doctor's letter that is supposed to exempt me from this humiliation. The airlines do not honor this documentation. I know not everyone has this special circumstance but I must deal with it and I choose not to.

Been there, done that, never again. I did nothing to warrant any singling out and I resent being part of the stupid, politically correct crap about not profiling.

wow!!!
i have a knee replacement. patriot act or not, that much metal
pre 911 would still have gotten me stopped. its not like they are picking on you. its not our fault that our joints are falling apart, and its not theirs
tsa is just trying to do their job
probably the best part of flying with dogs is that when you get into the plane, they have a confoirmation that your dog is already on board. always a relaxing feeling
until they start to bark in the hold.
i could always tell kozmo's bark...

Given that I am employed full time and live all the way across the country, there would be no way to go if I didn't fly

I'm not sure which I hate worse, long road trips or flying with my dogs. One is tiring and boring, the other has me very, very nervous the entire time my dog is out of my sight!

Sorry you have to deal with this, but thanks for the heads up, Bekki. Another thing to add to the list of things to check!

Take care and drive safely!

I would rather drive any day and have my dog with me than put him or her in cargo. I like to drive, I have the leisure to do so and flying puts me in an intolerably bad situation personally. So that is why do not fly.

I realize others do not have my special circumstance and when I was traveling extensively for work some years ago those circumstances did not apply. I made many uneventful trips to and from Washington DC in the 70s.

My experience with Delta in Ontario CA and Memphis TN was quite enough to cast this decision in concrete.
