Update on Zane Grey

Tetreault Sep 21, 2010 10:20 AM

Just hung up the phone after talking with Dr. Wright, one of my vets doing surgery on Zane Grey yesterday.

They started surgery around 3:30 p.m. and finished around 6:00 p.m. This morning he looks good. There where 4 areas on the bone that was crushed. We had originally believed it was just an even break. Not so when they went in to put a plate and screws in the two pieces of his bone. He had been de-gloved, so they cleaned up the area and sewed it back, plus a couple of areas on the same leg, his foot and a long part of his skin needed stitches.

He will only be able to go out on a leash for 6 to 8 weeks. He cannot go out on his own (like alone), as he may try to run or jump and mess things up. He will re-Xray the leg in about 8 weeks to see if all is healing well. It may take up to 12 weeks before he can be active again. So lure coursing this fall is out of the picture. Anyway it is out of Zane Grey Picture This's picture.

My husband has decided that he will be closing the area up with a more privacy type fence. This way they will not be able to see the squirrels' activities. I like that idea too.

Thanks for your prayers and thoughts. Thanks to those who emailed me privately and posted on this board. I plan to pick him up Thurs. I really miss my Zane Grey. He is the funniest dog I think I have ever had in my household.

glad to hear zane grey is recovering well...

a privacy fence so the dogs can't see the squirrels???
most of us know that our dogs don't need to see anything
to go crazy
the sound of something in my "back 40" sends the pack
off in the night hunting.
save the money and forget the privacy slats, my dogs ate them...
get a stronger fence

Agree with Patric except can you keep the squirrels from climbing over into your yard?

I sympathize with you as you care for Zane Grey 24/7. One of my greyhounds broke a leg and his in-home recovery was pure hell. He thought he was just fine and keeping him quiet, on leash, and comfortable was a real challenge. He even soaked his cast in his water bucket and we had to have it replaced. I wish you a more sane experience than I had over the next few weeks.

OMG, Linda! I'm so glad that Zane Grey will be ok. I know you'll struggle keeping him mellow. I'm glad the other escapees all got gathered up safely.

Thanks Sheila and everyone else who has written to me and on the board. I drove to my vet this afternoon to pick him up. It is just down the street from my home, and the vet had to sedate him this afternoon as one of the pins was loosening and moving outward. Zane was happy to see me and wanted to go home. Just as I was getting his crate ready to bring him out to the car, Dr. Wright came out and said the health department had contacted the clinic today and said Zane Grey had to be quarentined for ten days. Since he has been there beginning last Friday, the vet said I would not be charged for the remainding days and I could pick him up on Monday as the quarentine would be complete.

Sera, my dog sitter was on her way to buy turtle food at the pet shop with her father when they saw Zane Grey and Sassy running down the ditch near the highway. They drove after them and stopped and that is when Zane Grey went out into the road, according to Sera. She tried to pick him up and put him in the back of an SUV who's driver offered to take him to the vet when he bit Sera. She spent the night in the hospital Friday night and was released Sat., after her hand began to swell more on Friday.

The hospital reported it to the health department, therefore, now he has to stay at the vet's until Monday.

Everyone else was safe. Sassy jumped into the back of the deputy's patrol car and was driven to the vet where I met up with them and put her in my vehicle. I told the deputy thanks and yes, my dogs are very well trained. (with the exception of Zuma, who jumped in and then jumped right back out and headed for the wood.) She came home alone and very tired later.

Thanks again.

Dear Linda,

I have been reading of the ordeal that you, your family, and your dogs have endured this past week, and I just wanted to let you know how relieved I am that Zane Gray has gotten through the surgery okay, and that the other dogs are all home safe and sound. I know that it's been a really difficult time, and my thoughts have certainly been with you.

Best wishes,
Rebecca
