How to tame my newly caught black racer?

cito Oct 11, 2003 10:16 AM

I've had him for about 3 days now, he seems to be settling in nicely, he loves to curl up in the little hiding cave thing i got him. I really want to hold him and tame him so i can take him out at will without fear of geting bit or him getting scared and fleeing from my hands into the a.c. vents. Even wearing gloves, i get sooo scared to pick him up, just the look on his face, he gets into the "s" position and when i get closer he cocks his head back farther ready to strike. So i put a pillow case over his head and then try to pick him up from the middle of his body and he get scared and quickly squirms away. If i pick him up, will he continue to bite me while im holding him? Do you have any ideas on how to get him comfortable with getting picked up and not so skittish? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, i really want to keep this guy.

Hey,

Just gently and very slowly pick him up. When I'm trying to tame a racer, I will stay close to a shelf or something. And you are probably wondering why? Well if he gets skitish with me, I can just destract him by holding him up to the shelf. And he will want to climb on it. Dont let him climb all over it because he may want to get away. But if hes mad hold him up to something that will get mind on that item. Let him move through your hands when doing that. I hate holdig a racer or coachwhip with gloves, its not comfortable to me and it scares them. You dont have to be scared of him at all, remember he bites you out of fear. Once they see you will not hurt them they will calm down. However some do and some dont. But best of luck with. THANKS, WILLIAM H. AND THE GREEN PINE MUSEUM.
