PH Flea Advice, please?

Roseann Oct 20, 2010 07:52 AM

Hi,
You all have been such a great source of advice for us, wonder if you could give me your experience regarding fleas. We live in NY and don't have a big flea problem, but last month I took Junior to the kennel for an overnight stay and they found fleas on him. It's was a hot, dry summer so lots of fleas I'm told. The kennel owner dipped him. (Ugh-won't be taking him back there) He now has a rash, but that's not the question. I'm going away for 4 days in November and will need to leave him again. We have found another kennel and will take all the precautions we can here to make sure he doesn't continue to have fleas again.

So to my questions finally: How do you all handle fleas? Secondly and most importantly, the new kennel said if they find a dog has fleas, their procedure is to treat them with Advantage or Front Line and then give them a med CAPSTAR. Have you ever used or heard of that? I am going to check with my vet today, but since PH are so sensitive to some meds, I want someone experienced with PH to give me a heads up if I should totally refuse this should the question come up.

Thanks again for all your practicle help in keeping Junior the happy, healthy, crazy boy he is.

My dogs do just fine using Frontline. This summer I never applied it since the beach weather was very cool here in southern Calif. There are two drugs that start to kill fleas within 30 min. One is the Capstar but thought that was only approved for cats the other is Comfortis. I know of someone who has a mostly outdoor dog and it has eliminated fleas on him completely. They are overrun by them. We use both at the shelter I work at for severe cases and never have had an issue although we don't get too many pure sighthounds.
You will probably hear a lot of negative stff about any of these drugs. I have been using Frontline for 7 years. Not an issue for my PH.

Good luck.

I treat with Frontline when taking the dogs to an area where there are fleas - lure coursing mostly. I have never had a flea problem here in the desert. I have had no bad reactions from Frontline with the Pharaohs. I have not used it on the whippet as yet.

One of my customers' vets told her about this stuff called WALLY. All natural. He said it works. I have never used it though, so I don't know. But she used it and loved it. Said it was great for ticks in her heavy tick area.

I found it under Wally's All Natural Flea and Tick Control. It has peppermint oil and other oils in it.

I use the spray on Frontline because ticks are a HUGE problem where I live this time of year. I have used it on all my dogs since if first came out with NO issues. I use the spray because it does not leave that nasty oily spot and I can cover the problem areas better. I have never had a flea problem and I don't know about those drugs but the Frontline has always worked and my dogs have never had a reaction to it. Good luck!!

Texas is full of fleas and ticks, but (knock on wood) we do not have a problem here at the house. DeeDee has picked up fleas at shows, and I have had good luck with Capstar. I have only had to use it a few times.

I also use Frontline on my dogs. It works well for them. Never had any problems with it. They spend alot of time outside, so it's not uncommon for them to get fleas or ticks. I just give them baths often and make sure their bedding is clean. There are a few easy remedies you could try that will kill them off.
