Shedding question

peejpm Nov 01, 2010 11:57 AM

I just want to make sure Abby isn't losing her fur for some other reason. Is it normal for them to shed in the fall? It seems like she has in the past, but it is weird to me since it is getting colder and she should be keeping her fur! She always sheds quite a bit, but this is a full blown blow!

Yes, Brewster had finished blowing coat mid to late summer and is now fully blowing coat again. I always thought it was because we turned the heat on, but this year it started before we started turning the heat on. Whoever says Shibas blow coats once/year lies. Bigtime. LOL

Yep that is pretty normal. Shibas generally blow their coat in the Spring and Fall. Don't worry though... Abby will have plenty of coat to keep her warm... that is what sheds in the Spring.

That is what I thought. But, wanted to make sure it was nothing else. I am getting senile in my old age and can't remember anything!

We seem to blow coat 3 or 4 times per year (every season)!

Seriously... at times it seems like a year round thing!

I always say that Beni and Kari only shed twice a year......the first 6 months and the last 6 months......anyway....that's what vacuums were made for!!!

I've never experienced a "blown coat"....I've seen one, though. Why do some shibas blow their coat while others shed continuously w/o the big effect?

And who really wants to wear black clothes, anyway?? Denim is OK almost anywhere and hair doesn't stick to it!

Ha ha! So right! My hardwood floors look so gross when the sunlight hits them. I can see Abby's hairs all over it!

How is Abby doing? I think of her often and hope things are going well.

It's been my experience that Kita (older altered female) has a larger coat blow twice a year, but the whole coat doesn't release at that time, only some of it. The rest of it comes off is small sheds throught the year. Taiko on the other hand (older not altered male) does a massive coat blow twice a year that lasts about 2 weeks and between those coat blows I can't get much off him. I've been told the altered vs. not altered hormones contribute to this, but there could be some male vs. female diffferences as well. Coat type could factor in as well. Taiko's coat is a bit harsher than Kita's more plush type coat.

Either way, shibas shed and it's very bad twice a year (for me it's around Christmas time and early summer), but year round I have fur on my clothes. Course, I have a cat too.
