English vs. American Labs?

Today on a walk, I met a puppy (11 months) whose owner said she was an English lab. This puppy looked just like a large Lab, but I was wondering what the differences are between English and American labs, if any.

As far as I know the English lab is stockier while the American is tall and lanky.
