Halloween after the fact

galadrialphs Nov 13, 2010 07:21 AM

I know we are a couple weeks past Halloween but I just got a chance to get photos downloaded and sized. At an agility trial I was at that weekend, they had a costume party for dogs and people once the trial was over. It was a lot of fun (although Tru didn't think so). Tru is my cute wicked girl and a friend had already nicked named her Vampira several months ago so that was her for this year's Halloween party. She did not find it amusing and several people suggested I not go to sleep that night for fear she may get even! Trip was my Army Guy. Shawna, aren't those great PJ's. Thank Alice again from me!
OK, don't some of you others torment your dogs for Halloween? Let's see pictures.

Those are great photos!!!! This board has been so quiet lately -- and not nearly enough photos are being posted!!! I was lazy this year and didn't dress anyone up...maybe for Christmas I'll try something.

I'll be sure to pass the thanks on to my mom! I'm trying to talk her into making enough to get a booth going at some of the dog shows -- she's got 2 pairs in leopard-type print and 2 in white with black paws if anyone's interested! Only $25 (until I convince her to raise her price!) - plus shipping.

Again - awesome photos!!!

Pleeeese,. you folks who are using Facebook - don't abandon this forum!!!

At the risk of sounding alarmist, FB is not a safe site - this is a fact. You are probably being subjected to data mining and have no way of knowing it.

I will not be signing on to FB for this reason and I understand and respect anyone's decision to use it but I will not and I hope everyone will continue to post on DH so those of us who choose not to use FB will not be out of the loop in the PH world.

Sam,

I agree with you about the FB issues. I fried an old computer with a virus from FB. When I bought the new one, they installed a new virus scanner that (so far!!) has caught any bad stuff and the computer is running great. Bad news....I lost all my messages, photos etc. off the old computer that had not been backed up...live and learn!!

Enjoy the weekend....we are turning cold now. Rain over the past few days with temps down into the upper 20's and highs only into the 50's. Made a few new dog coats to keep the old timers warm and happy. Happy for me is spending a lot of time in the kitchen working on soups, stews and casseroles. The smells are like a slice of heaven on a plate!! Oh and I still quilt in the meantime too.....

I do both and have passed your message on to the Facebook crowd. I noticed the drop off as well and miss having things on both so that everyone is in the loop.

Sam,

As someone who participated in some of the beta trials of Mozilla here at the University of Illinois all those many years ago, I briefly was on Facebook just to see how it worked. Long and short of it, I'm not there any more. Not only are viruses a problem as well as commercial data mining, I was very concerned to Facebook's philosophy about privacy controls. Even with their bally-hooed reform, they do not do enough to make their privacy settings easily found and clearly understandable.

Please, if you stay on Facebook, review and understand your privacy settings and then remember who can see what as you post.

I'm gratified to get some support about this FB thing. I'm not a geek by any means but I do have geek friends who do understand the issues and I am willing to take their word for it.

Casual users (like me) don't usually know that data is never actually deleted. It's still there and even writing over several times does not always remove enough of the signal to make it unreadable so someone with the right equipment, software and know-how can reconstruct deleted files with a little work. The only sure way is physical destruction of the storage media. I'm lucky I have someone to keep me informed about security issues.
One a photo or information is posted on FB you can consider it cast in concrete...that's a fact. So please be very careful what you post. I specifically reqest everyone who uses FB to please never post my photo or anything whatsover about me (and my dogs).

Not paranoid but realistic and cautious.

Sam -- you do realize that THIS site has ZERO privacy controls? And that your posts have your full name and other information on them? The entire internet (not just FB) gets mined for data so if you are concerned about your private information, you should not use computers at all. Every thing you post on any site plus any ordering you do plus any web page you visit is mined for data. FYI: My husband works at a company that mines your searches to know what advertisements to pop up on the page.

I think it is fine if you don't want to use FB but my reasons for not posting on this site very often have nothing to do with my having joined FB. My minimal posting started LONG before that.

Common sense goes a long ways. Yes, if we use our full names in our signatures, our full names are available to anyone on the web.

However, we do not provide enough information here that anyone who assembles all our data will know when we go on vacation as well as where we live. Yes, I have posted the city where I live but I do not put here when I go on vacation (or any where else). Yes, given how unique my name is someone could figure out my street address. But all this information has been in phone books for years. Of course, some people paid extra to be unlisted.

The problem with Facebook is that people seemed to get lulled into a false sense of intimacy and trust. They start telling the world too much information, IMHO. What bothers me is how one may set one's own controls reasonably but as soon as one "friends" someone else, that person's controls come into play as well.

Appropriate privacy controls is a big topic with many nuances. We'll not resolve it here and I do respect other points of view than my own. There is not a one size fits all answer

For whatever reason this list has slowed down in recent weeks and I, for one, have missed hearing about the antics of all those other PH's out there. That's my real message.

Yes, I am aware of the lack of protection overall in computer use and noticed a large decrease in DH activity and having recently been made aware of the popularity of FB and talking to some very smart, educated technical type people I became concerned. It seemed logical to connect the massive use of FB to the decline of DH and I think it's a valid assumption.

I am told (by those techies and geeks I know) that FB is a major source of viri, Trojans and mining - more so than most. I do no on-line ordering at all and DH is one of only two lists/sites I use. add to this e-mail and a very occasional use of a search engine my on line time is well below average.

In talking to many of my friends I found a great lack of concern for security and also a large amount of misplaced trust in the integrity of the world in general. I was hoping to stir that pot a little is all. When a dozen or so Masters degreed computer scientists, geeks and techies tell me they don't trust FB I listen. I think data mining is dishonest - I don't know my information is being taken and used and that is, in my book, unethical. No offense meant.

Honestly, you haven't offended me at all -- just pointing out that FB is not the only place data is mined and by posting on this site or using the internet at all you have opened yourself up to that. I feel certain that your friends with master's degrees can confirm this.

And my reasons for abandoning DH have to do with the multitude of flame wars and the fact that this site became about 90% about breeding/brags. I quit posting on here regularly before I started using FB.

I know of many other people that have told me the same thing -- they quit spending time on DH because they didn't find it to be fun anymore.

I suspect that my pattern will continue -- I generally check DH about once a week but don't start new threads myself anymore.

Yes, you raise another good point. Once data of any sort is posted to the net, some server somewhere will hold it. Sam, I think you're listening to some well-informed people (who just happen to think like me !)
