Mystery Here.........long story

Kiricki Nov 16, 2010 11:18 AM

Well, we have something strange going on with Murphy. I'm not sure anyone has an answer, but I just thought I'd talk about it and give you all something to think about. LOL

One evening, about two weeks ago, shortly after 8:00 PM, Murphy began to look very agitated. Walking about through the house with eyes wide and ears up. Then he began to tremble and pant...typical of how he reacts to fireworks, and thunder. We heard nothing. I gave him some Rescue Remedy, but it took over an hour for him to calm down. A week passed and then it happened again. Then, it began to happen every evening at just about the same time. I called our vet and he suggested giving him Rescue Remedy about an hour before this would happen. We've done that since last Friday. It helps, in that he doesn't pant or really tremble, just a little quiver. He has also been coming up on the couch to sit between us and that seems to comfort him. We don't make a big fuss over him, just let him snuggle close to us.

All we can think of is that a neighbor, who has some sort of music set-up in his garage and is out there most evenings, might have gotten a new amplifier or such, that makes a sound that Murphy can hear, but we can't. We aren't acquainted with this neighbor, and not sure if we should go ring the doorbell and inquire.

Our vet says if we continue to use the RR for a period of 2-3 weeks, he will probably realize that while he doesn't like what he is hearing, it isn't going to hurt him.

Anyone else ever heard of anything like this??

Mom, it's just a scary sound that I am hearing!

I should have added that Murphy is entirely normal in every way. No changes whatsoever in his eating, sleeping, activity. It's just that hour to hour and a half in the evening.

I just wish you would make it stop!

I have no ideas, but just wanted to say how scary this must be. It is hard when you can't help your baby! I hope someone has some good advice, or it goes away as fast as it came on.

Sorry Murphy, hope you feel better!

Although it's nice to have a furry loving friend without any opinions, it's times like that I wish they could talk. I'm sorry, I don't have any ideas. A sound you can't hear is a good thought. I hope he's back to normal soon!

Well since we're throwing out ideas... just wondering if you are watching a different tv show at that time or maybe a show that has a strange sound to it every week?

We thought of that Bob, so we have made sure to be on different channels and different shows. It wasn't hard to do. Just seemed to work out that way. Also, sometimes we have the music channel on and sometimes a movie.

We live on the edge of town and Jia started doing that in the AM and early evening. Turns out it was bird hunting season and there is pasture a couple of blocks away. While the sound of the guns wasn't obvious to me and Robyn at first, we finally figured out what was wrong. Glad it's getting dark early now LOL.

Forgot to mention....we had a house that burned 3 doors down and they are rebuilding it. Yeah....Hammers do NOT make for a happy Shiba. She's gotten used to it, but it took a few weeks. Could be something like that that you don't even notice.

Abby had superdog hearing. She can hear our friends van drive up. So, maybe he is hearing something that bothers him.

How is he doing now?
