New Integrated Vet Visit

brewstersmom Nov 16, 2010 12:35 PM

It went really well. Brewster, for those that don't know him, is an abnormally laid back Shiba around people. He is almost lab-like. He is a super friendly affectionate easy dog...except with other dogs and vets (or anyone in scrubs). Typically, as soon as we get in a vet's office he goes crazy. He did not at the new vet. His tail went down, but he seemed to be cautiously optimistic. haha...When we got into the exam room and the vet tech tried to look at his collar or something he snapped, so we did put a muzzle on him to be safe. However, once the vet came in he had such a soothing way about him, Brewster calmed right down.

Unfortunately, in the state of NH a rabies vax is required. Anything else is not. We only did the rabies, as much as the vet wished we didn't have to. If we lived in MA we could have done the titre, but NH does not allow it, I guess, and there is a big serious process if you do not do it (including fines and visits from state officials. haha). I was surprised since this state is usually "live free or die."

So, with Brewster's history of seizures close to the past vaccines he suggested we do not give any heart guard for a couple of weeks, as it lowers the threshold for seizure activities in dogs that are prone. He also gave an herbal supplement called "Thuja." It comes in a little pearl.

Anyway, no seizures today, but Brewster is not himself. He's definitely not feeling well (lethargic, won't even get up for a treat). He looks like he has a hangover. Hopefully he doesn't have a seizure this time. He has been seizure free since our last vet visit (2 yrs ago, I think it was!).

Also, forgot to mention that he is down to 23.4 lbs. The vet said this was good for him and we should keep him on the food if it's working out. We are still feeding Solid Gold Hollistic blend, 1/4 cup 2x/day. We also give him some biscuits and other treats or fresh fruit/veg/meat from time-to-time. He said he looks very healthy and young and has a strong heartbeat. He is 8 yrs old and 2 mos now.

Good news about the checkup! How are your kids doing? We haven't heard much about them for awhile.

It's good to read that all went so well! Poor Brewster, it's hard to deal with those scary vet things. I do think being lethargic after a rabies shot is pretty much the norm.....it's happened with all our dogs.

Thanks to your reply to Murphy's dilema!

Amanda is there a correlation between the rabies shot or the herbal supplement that has Brewster feeling lethargic?

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.

Hi Bob,
Brewster usually does not feel well after shots. The vet said the supplement seems to ease the symptoms some dogs feel. It didn't seem to make a difference for Brewster, unfortunately. My poor boy was not feeling good yesterday. I dropped a chunk of hotdog and he wouldn't even get up for that (normally he will dart into the kitchen at the slightest sound of dropped food). I brought it to his bed and he barely ate it.

The good news is he seemed a lot better this morning (I'd guess about 50% back to norm).

I just hope he doesn't have any more seizures.

Praying for no more seizures!

Glad the visit went well. Hopefully Brewster did not have a seizure after that visit.

I can't wait until titers are allowed in more states. I am not fortunate in that area in my state either, but we are fighting it and hopefully in Kita's lifetime the law gets changed. We've got some good vet support helping us out with it.

Give Brewster a good scratch from me. He's a special guy.
