Infertility question

jwilliby May 27, 2003 10:03 PM

Do any of you pros out there know if it is possible to test a male gecko to see if it is fertile? I have bred my male to 8 females and witnessed their business on several occasions. From those 8 females, I've had 20 eggs so far, and not one has been fertile. Some have laid three clutches already, a couple haven't laid any. I could see not getting it right the first couple of times, but he's had plenty of practice on these girls. Just to save a few posts, all of my housing conditions are exactly as they should be(temperature gradient, supplementation, humidity, plenty of hiding, plenty of food, all food is well gutloaded) and all of my geckos are in good health.

How do you know these eggs are fertile??
well, Im not exactly sure how to test whether or not a male in fertile or not, but I dont really think a female would produce eggs unless they were infact fertile, especially if this isnt their first time breeding.

I know that I'm incubating right because I'm hatching babies from another girl(different breeding). She has never had contact with the male in question.(by the way, just to clarify, I use the method outlined on Albey's site, and I am incubating at 84 degrees)

Sometimes first-time breeder females will produce eggs, but not fertile ones, even if mated, for their first couple clutches. Especially if they are bred before one year of age.

I don't know about fertilty tests for male geckos, sorry. Try re-breeding them all.

they range in age from 1-2.5 yrs old. I'll seperate the male for awhile and reintroduce him and see what happens.....
