Favorite collars

Hello everyone!

I've got a AB mix (half AB, half GSD/Lab and Brussels Griffon) that is currently on a 1" nylon martingale collar. I typically don't walk him on it, he's got an easy walk harness if we're going out walking or hiking.

I really don't need a collar for the sake of controlling my dog as he's never more than 10 feet away from me, and has generally excellent leash manners (barring the presence of squirrels, of course) it's more for holding all his tags.

The base of his neck is quite a bit wider than up at the base of his skull (normal, yes I know)so while his collar seems to fit him comfortably most of the time is also easy for him to pull out of when he decides he doesn't want to wear it (I come home to a naked dog a couple times a month). I don't want to tighten his collar since his neck folds are already starting to show signs of rubbing.

So my question is: What types of collars do you have on your ABs?

Rudy is 2.5 years old, adopted at 10 weeks old, returned to the shelter at 2 after reportedly attacking the family's other dog, an adult Maltese, which is essentially a death sentence for a shelter dog...funny thing is, he LOVES little dogs and has an enormous tolerance for them. It's the big dogs that make him nervous (probably because he hadn't met many). He weighed in at a whopping 38 pounds at the shelter and seems to be settling out now at 65. He loves to run, hates the water, he worries when he can't find his 2 cats and hides behind my legs when there are too many men around.

Thanks in advance,
Sarah

I'm not an AB owner but I do own Shiba Inus that use martingale collars so I just wanted to weigh in on that. From the photos... which are terrific btw... it doesn't look like your pup is wearing a martingale but it is hard to tell in these photos. I've never had one of my Shibas slip out of one as they act as a modified choke collar. As such they should never be worn as a regular collar just from the stand point that the loop could get caught on something. At any rate you have a great looking dog that looks like he can run very fast! Hopefully there are some AB owners out there that can help you with your question.

Thanks for responding!

The loop on the martingale is small, maybe an inch and a half wide. Small enough that I don't worry about it catching on anything but it's functional enough that his collar doesn't just come over his head without a little bit of work on his part.

All my dogs wear martingales. However as was stated, martingales should not be left on unattended dogs.

Im interested, how did the breed mix get figured?
