Puppy has upset stomach

wkdong Dec 16, 2010 09:12 PM

So on Monday my puppy started vommiting and she wouldn't eat any food. She would however drink water. Well, we've taken her to the vet throughout the past couple of days and after a numerous amount of tests and medications, she still hasn't gotten any better. Now she's sleeping all day. We did a test for giardia (neg), a pancreas lipase test (neg), a blood drawl (nothing except low glucose levels and a weak immune system which I was told is common with puppies). We did an X-ray and it was shown that there was some gas in her small intestines which the doctor said was somewhat high since she's so small (about 1.25lbs). Since she doesn't have any type of diseases, the doctor suspects that there's something stuck/blocking, which is causing the stomach upset. He prescribed something to allveiate the gas, along with some food to inject. However, after feeding her the injection food, she vommitted (I suspect this might be because we gave her a lot though). The doctor said that if she continues to vomit, then that means something is struck.

Basically, I'm wondering is she in any danger if something is stuck. And how would they get the object out (He mentioned something about flushing out her system)? I personally don't know what she could have possibly chewed, but a day before she got sick, she was nibbling on some poinsettia. Could that be a cause of this illness that has been going on for about 4 days now? I really don't know what to do. I don't want to put her through any unnecessary procedures if I don't have to, because flushing out her system doesn't sound very pleasant.

You didn't mention how old the puppy is or what she had been eating. If the x-ray didn't show anything, she is unlikely to have swallowed something that could cause a blockage, but if there is a buildup of gas somewhere, that would be the place to look. Was there a change of food? Since she is drinking without vomiting, give her very thin gruels to keep her nourished until you can get this resolved. For such a small dog, this can rapidly become very dangerous. Without more information I am unable to give more advice than to either have another x-ray or ultrasound done, or to have her checked endoscopically.
