Homemade Dog Food

pirate18 Jan 02, 2011 12:12 PM

I recently began making homemade dog food for my two chihuahuas, and I am following recipes online and creating diversity in the meals, but I am concerned about them getting enough nutrients and vitamins. One of the two dogs has congestive heart failure and is a little overweight, is the foods that I made for the other dog ok for her to eat as well? The dog with heart failure takes medicine that our vet subscribed, but I read online that giving flaxseed oil, and certian vitamins like l-carnitine are good for her heart, is it ok to combine those in the recipe and allow the other dog to consume them as well or should I only give these to the dog with heart disease? I also would like to know what vitamins and how much should I give to the dogs daily?

Thanks so much for your help!

I don't know exactly what you are preparing for your dogs, but I suggest you read my answer to "Opinions of Raw Feeding" from October 12. For a dog with congestive heart failure, I would include an ounce of raw beef heart daily, CoQ10,and the chinese herb Jiao gu lan.Hawthorne extract may also help.
