On Monday, January 10th the Warwick City Council will consider an ordinance (PCO 29-10) to prohibit the debarking of a dog or cat unless a veterinarian states in writing that the surgery is medically necessary. Public input will be accepted at the committee hearing held at 6pm prior to the full city council meeting. Responsible owners and breeders are encouraged to attend this meeting and ask city council members to leave this decision between owners and their veterinarians.

The hearing information is as follows:

Warwick City Council Committee Meeting

Date: Monday, January 10

Time: 6pm

Location: Warwick City Hall

Lower Level Conference Room

3275 Post Road

Warwick, Rhode Island 02886

Much misinformation exists about debarking of dogs. When performed by a veterinarian, debarking is an acceptable medical procedure that is often done as a “last resort” when all other methods of modifying a dog’s behavior have failed. For many responsible owners, debarking is the only alternative to euthanizing or surrendering their canine companion to a local shelter when their pet’s noisy behavior continually disturbs the community.

The decision to debark a dog is one that is best left to the owner and his veterinarian. The AKC is not alone in these beliefs—the American Veterinary Medical Association believes that debarking is a viable final alternative to euthanization.

What You Can Do

· Attend the Warwick City Council Committee Meeting on January 10th and ask them to oppose this ordinance.

· Contact the Warwick Mayor and City Council and ask them to oppose this ordinance.
