My pets have ALWAYS slept with us. My parents wouldn't allow it growing up but we somehow always seemed to sneak out little Yorkie/Poodle mix Napoleon under the covers. Not sure I could sleep without my bed warmers. I do know that I sleep better with the dogs when Kevin is out of town but when he is home there just does not seem to be enough room and I feel cramped and sore in the morning. I also wake up a lot through out the night. Maybe I can get Kevin a dog bed and place it on the side of the bed.

I'm willing to risk getting hit by a bus when I walk in our campustown (which does happen to about one student per year). I think I'll continue to risk bubonic plague from my dogs--interesting that they did not cite one reported case...geez, who funded that study?

I agree Ruth! Being alive is dangerous. Until they prove pets cause arthritis, I'm still sleeping with dogs. I have been sleeping with pets for almost 50 years and never caught anything from them. Sleeping with pets is good for your soul

That's the best part or if you need some heat on the lower back for sore muscles they work better then a heating pad all snuggled up against you!

Sam, Charlotte,

What's the secret to getting the dogs to lie down where you want?

Harvey wants to snuggle up to me but he doesn't want any wrinkly blankets or sheets under him--so I adjust. Bo wants under the covers snuggled up against my belly--so I adjust. Note: Bo takes the first shift and Harvey takes the second.

Gracie will lie at my feet if she decides there is enough room for her on my front side. But she may choose to lie against my back.

Mind you these patterns are how we start the night. After a dog goes for a drink of water or deserts to the living room couch, another dog will wander into the bedroom. At which point I am expected to make that dog's preferred spot ready while not disrupting any other current occupant.

Yes, I have learned to sleep almost exclusively on one side or another to accommodate my dogs. I also have a king-sized bed in a one person household just so the dogs have plenty of room.

Yes, I am probably more than a bit crazy to indulge my dogs this ay. But I suspect I am not the only one. Come on, 'fess up!

Ruth- There is no secret - I do exactly what you do - accommodate myself to their preferences. Since it's winter Journey prefers the right side halfway down the bed. She likes to be able to stick her head out. She usually stays all night. Corsair likes the foot of the bed, outside the covers but with a blanket he can mess up into a nest, to keep his back warm presumably. He decamps to the living room sometime during the night. MeToo only gets in bed in the morning and she just wants a backscratch and would I please get the heck up and make her breakfast!

In the hot months none of them want to be in the bed. I run fans at night and they hang out in the breeze. MeToo stays in the living room on a dog bed. The other two use the dog beds in the bedroom.

When I first came home from my recent surgeries I had to have a caregiver living in until I could take care of myself again. (she's been dog sitting for me since I moved here and my guys really like her - and she is very attached to them). Journey slept in the guest room with her and came in my bedroom to say good morning after she had been fed breakfast. MeToo and Corsair were a little less blatant - they came in, said Hi, collected their morning backscratches and then ran off to eat.

No secrets, no training, just the usual spoiled and pampered PH (and a whippet). I was wondering if they would get depressed when I got on my own again. They looked for Jean the first day after she went off duty and now they are back to schmoozing me again.

Real dog people are definitely nuts. Sam

Ruth, the biggest pain I have is Killian. He will sleep under the covers horizontally and doesn't realize that I do not want a huge hot humid breathing PH head lying on my feet of ankles! When he is hot he jumps off the bed, looks out the window, then gets back on the bed whimpering in our faces to lift the covers so that he can "walk" under them to a comfortable spot at the bottom of the bed taking the blankets with him. He will not do the GI Joe belly crawl like sweet baby Cadie or our little terrier mutt. Cadie will disappear for several hours at night and we know she is on the couch but only after she checks out the counters for forgotten left out food.

Thanks, Charlotte and Sam, I chuckled at both your stories. Sam, glad to hear that the dog returned to their senses and your bed! (Also glad to hear that you don't need a live-in caregiver anymore).

Anyone else?
